EGR valve sensor, how necessary?

Hi all, am currently getting rid of extraneous pollution gear off my LB9 engine, AIR, Cat and fitting headers, (yes will fit heated O2 sensor) I would also like to remove the EGR setup and from my research it seems I can do this provided I leave the solenoid intact so the computer thinks its still doing it job (obviously vacuum lines will be sorted out). What I would like to know is; what is the sensor that screws into the cast base of the EGR valve and can I do away with it so I can completely blank off the ports where the EGR valve sits?
Cheers Simon
