Need help on an old 305
I got my 84z about this time last year. I knew the motor had been replaced years ago, all the kid i bought it from knew was it was a 305. i ran the casting #'s and its a 1978 305, with old 76cc heads (1.72/1.50 valves). My question is... i have a set of 64cc 1.94/1.50 heads, a Summit 1104 (.465 lift) cam, a Victor Jr. intake and a Holley 650 carb. Will this set up work on this motor?
I know, I know get a 350... its coming soon. but I'm would like a little more power till it and more $ comes.
I'm not building a race car here just a nice street cruiser, any help would be great.
Thanks

Heads might ruin your CR depending on what it currently is.
Ditch the idea of the Victor Jr. Waaaaayy too much intake for a 305 (and a mild 350 IMHO). The carb is even on the big side for a 305. I could be wrong, but that intake won't fit under the stock flat hood too.

Sounds like somebody swept up the scat on their shop floor, picked out everything they found in the pile that was even remotely worthwhile, and assembled what was left into ..... that.
And now, sounds like you are proposing to do some more of the same.
Not a good plan.
I'd leave it alone, spend my money on whatever else it is I REALLY want, and throw it in the trash as-is at the earliest possible instant (if not somewhat before then). EVERY PENNY you wast on ..... that ..... thing ....... , will just delay achieving your REAL goal that much longer. If you can explain how making it take longer to get what you REALLY want is a good idea, clearly and convincingly enough that you fool yourself, then .... you deserve to wait.

Re: Need help on an old 305
my buddy bought a 3rd gen a few months ago with a 305. first thing he wanted to do was start hopping up the 305. after some discussion i yanked the motor & sold it on craigslist for a few hundred. we got a great running 350 out of an old truck w/ a th400 for 5 bills. in the end it only cost him about $200 to have a 350. the vic jr. is more for a radical high r.p.m. motor. just an idea to toss around.

just to clear up a few things. Its not a Vic. Jr. intake, it a Preformer (my bad) and Im not spending any money on this stuff, i have it laying around, the only money i would be spending would be on gaskets. These are good parts. i plan on building a 383 in the future, but for now I was wondering if this set up would work on the 305 thats in the car now. I'm tired of the opinions, im looking for the facts! Will this work or not. Its not that i dont value you opinions, but im just looking for the "yes or no answer". I have been around chevy small blocks all my life, dont you think I would know a 350 is better! I'm just trying to work with what i got on a tight buget.
Thanks guys.

If your budget is tight, don't waste EVEN A DIME on that 305. Not a gasket, not a quart of oil, NOT A DIME.
Build what you REALLY want and throw ..... that ..... in the trash.

i agree sofa. its a hard pill for people to swallow. adding high performance parts to a low performance, small bore, engine will be a disappointment. but your cam & carb will bolt up. what part number is the intake? i think 1.84 is the limit on valves for a 305, but im not sure. its been awhile since i messed with one. whats the casting number on the heads?
