1992 RS 305 sat for 10 years
I got a 1992 RS hard top 305 TBI automatic. The previous owner stated the oil pump went, and it seized. well, I got the motor to run, and its not seized, but it has some issues. It seems to need a head gasket on the passenger side, and also, I have zero fuel pressure. I tried to remove the old crap gas that was in the tank, i tried to siphon it out and there was nothing there. I hooked a low pressure air supply to the pressure and return lines, and they seemed clear, the tank pressurized slightly, and the car would start and idle. the fuel pump makes an audible noise for 2 seconds when the key is turned on, but i still have no flow with the lines disconnected. I removed the injectors from the throttle body, and they appear clear,, and the car sounds great when you put some fuel into the air intake system, so the motor seems to be undamaged. The oil pressure comes up normally also. I added 5 gallons of fue to the tank and sea foam. I am unable to remove the fuel filter, it is rusted on, but it appears to have ample flow based on the forced air being able to pass. do I need a new fuel pump? How bad of a job is it?
also, the fan comes on with the AC, but not when the car comes up to temp, where is the appropriate switch for that, the car has a temp gauge on the dash.

If you can hear the pump come on when you turn the key chances are the pump is working i say the rubber piece that connects the pump to the pick up tube deteriorated from sitting so long and the gas is not making its way up....i say drop the tank and take a look in there its probably a quick fix

I actually just went through this twice in the last 6 months. I also have a 92 RS that I've been dealing with the same issue (fuel pump) I found that even if the pump is running doesn't mean that you are getting fuel. I'm guessing that the rubber hose that connects the fuel pump to the sender unit has turned to mush so when you hear the pump prime its picking up the fuel but without that hose its just dumping it back into the take (which is why you have no fuel pressure).
as far as the fuel pump replacement its really not that hard. I did mine twice with the car raised up on jack stands, but it is a two person job so you will need an assistant to help pry the filler neck out of the hole.

Thanks guys. I'll post pictures ASAP. Its no beauty, its a labor of love. I will look to remove the tank this week.
I am unable to find a way to remove the tank. Does anyone have a link to detailed instructions? I have no problem putting in the time or effort. I just don't want to do it wrong. Where is the tank located? I was told the rear axle wll need to be dropped to make ample room to remove the tank.

Here is the link that I used to get a rough idea on what I was about to go through. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...p-not-bad.html
Tank is located behind the rear axle above the muffler.
I did mine without dropping the rear axle so it can be done. but like I said in my last post you will need a second set of hands.

Awesome post. I'll get a sitter and get on this later this week. Maybe there is life in this old lady. I wanted to just make it a daily driver. Nothing fancy. Some paint to make her pretty, and just drive her till the wheels fall off... then fix that and keep on driving.

When I put in an in-tank electric fuel pump a long time ago now, I had to drop the tank. I remember having to unhook the rear axle straps and the shocks to let the tank slide downward. I have a Rancho suspension so your needs may be different. I think I also had to unhook the filler neck from the body. I don't quite remember all of it. I did have two other guys help which was a real help. The tank was awkward when it all comes unscrewed. Be careful.

Hay, welcome to TGO! Any thirdgen is nice. A barn find is just cool. it's got story. I found mine on creigs list. Thats not nearly as epic. Good luck with your fuel problem, sorry to say I don't have personal experiance with this particular problem. Looking forward to some pics.
