AFR 195,s Verses vortecs
got a 408sbc 82 z28,,,
400 + 040
vortecs,,edelbrock performer,, 750 holley,,1.52 rockers.. regraphed HEI,, 1, 3/4 headers ,,single 3 inch system,,,etc,,etc,,
are the AFR 195,s and an edelbrock RPM intake worth the $1500 swap over,, anyone bought these AFR heads up against the stock 170cc intake runner GM Vortecs,,
My car is potant and runs on 95 octane pump gas no problem
8.5:1 comp ratio

No, without other modifications, they would not be worth it.
Without expert porting, those AFR's alone would make almost no difference at all over your Vortec heads.
It would be far more than $1500 to get a significant performance benefit out of them:
Porting + more cam + more compression + .......

Re: AFR 195,s Verses vortecs
Thanks mate,, just as i thought,,,,i was going to step up the cam anyway,,,,and with my dished pistons i could go to a flat top and i can go to 9.5:1 max with pump gas,,,,the engine man is super experienced old school and setting them up will be no problem for this guy,,,,,we will disguss the mathematics around the compression ratio,,head deal
i will talk to him and valuate the cc,s of the cylinders,, the combustion chambers,, work out the compression,,then go to the cam grinder guy,, again old school dude,,,all info will be needed to dersign a cam to run to 6500rpm ,,,as my old cam was set up to run from 1200 to 5500,,"street driving",,
i understand the jump will need more of everything and i can sell my existing setup for $1000,,
i figure the engine builder will know either way,,,
i will also need a better HEI,,i guess an MSD billet type will be ok,,
The CNC ported AFR,s will need to be matched to my intake and exhaust headers i know its critical and would be done with any engine we do regardless.
I thank you for the advise ,,steve from australia..

Totally dependent on cam duration

and quench

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/powe...ce-vs-dcr.html
Note
Oz 98 (RON ) gas is US 93 octane
Oz 95 = 91 US
My 12:1 383 runs fine on 95 (234/242 cam )

Re: AFR 195,s Verses vortecs
do the MATH, a vortec head will produce power about 500-700rpm LOWER than a 195 cc AFR head
if both make 470 ft lbs of torque at max efficiency , thats easily a 50 hp advantage for the AFR heads if the correct, compression, intake and cams used

(measured at the smallest part of the ports)
...........................sq inches........port cc
vortec......................1.66.............170
tfs195......................1.93.............195

Re: AFR 195,s Verses vortecs
What are your power/performance goals for this setup?
It appears you've been running a VERY mild setup and not even tapping the potential of the existing Vortec heads.
If you want AFR's because of the name and budget isn't an issue, or because you have huge power goals, go ahead. The Vortecs are good for an easy 400 hp.
I know....they're an extra 50 lbs on the car, but unlike traditional old-school iron heads, they don't come with the detonation tendency that prevents you from upping the compression. They're a fastburn chamber and don't require a lot of ignition timing for best power.
