please help with CA smog
hello ,
my car failed smog 2 days ago it is 92 with 5.0 tbi and i need help to figure out my options
overall results
comrehensive visual inspection:PASS
functional check:Failed
emission test: PASS
emission control system visual inspection/ functional check results
all of these things passed
pcv, catalytic converter, egr visual, fuel cap visual, spark controls, thermostatic air cleaner, air injection, vacuum lined to sensors/switches,ingntion timing:tdc, wiring to sensors, fuel evap contro0ls, check engine light, carb fuel injection, other emision related components, oxygen sensor, and liquid fuel leaks.
Failed
fuel cap functional
fuel evap controls functional
N/A
Egr functional
fillpipe restrictor
Asm Emission test results
15mph pass
the only section that was kind of low was CO% max0.50 ave 0.06 meas 0.02
25mph pass CO% max 0.41 ave 0.05 meas 0.01
smog guy said i need new gas cap
and some rubber lines mine where cracked i beleave it was to the fuel canister location:front d-side by head light black cylinder.... not real problem here...
my problem he also said that i need to have a hose hooked up from thermostatic snorkle (air cleaner) to the exhaust manifold.. from what i read it hepsl the carb warm up so it doesnt run cold for so long....
i have the hose but the manifold heat shield is not on my engine at all i can not find one anywhere so i have nowhere to hook the hose up to.
does anyone no where i can get just the shield without the whole exhaust manifold? plan to hit up a few junk yards if all else fails
or
is there any alternatives to the air cleaner such as open element filter?
will it pass ca smog? if i use a different air cleaner with no thermostatic snorkle will it still fail.. im guessing that if he didnt see the thermostatic snorkle and the whole on the bottum of it there would be know reason to think something was missing..
i see other engines all the time without this part and some with it. how are they getting around smog if in ca

Open element won't pass visual.
The heat stove is riveted together around the exhaust manifold. Not likely to find it by itself (but you may).
A '92 doesn't have a carb. Should be TBI (assuming you have an RS & V8).

You could try one without the hose connection or get one off a similar set up but if it's not 'original' enough well you know what it's like here. You could ask the tech. what would be acceptable but again you know what it's like here. But you might be lucky and have a non-a*****e to deal with.

Re: please help with CA smog
the manifold heat shield is not on my engine at all
gas cap
some rubber lines
Leave the air cleaner alone. Yes it will fail if you put something else there.

You are right it is a tbi not carb and i dont think i will find it either i have been looking around the net for like 2 days now and nothing is coming up to the guy moving to cali i have had 2 camaro's around the same year 92 and i have had the worst time with them and smog.... Nothing to do with car but more so the prior owners did not.treat there cars very well so ca smog can be a breeze as it has been for my other vehicles but when it comes to different mods and diy riggers good luck!

Re: please help with CA smog
Every stock TBI Chevy I have seen had a Thermac.
If it came with it, you have basically no option whatsoever other than to replace the manifold with one that some doof hasn't already senselessly hacked the heat stove off of. I know of no way to get the heat shield separately. Not sure what other manifolds (e.g. truck TBI 350) might fit, might have to get a new one. Check 1AAuto and PartsPros and places like that.
