'87 Iroc hesitates when accelerated...Help Please

I am new to this forum, and have learned many things regarding my car. I have had my car for a year now, and am the only one who works on it (due to lack of funds) and have learned a tremendous amount from this forum. I have replaced the IAC 3 times in the last 6 months, and now I am thinking I may have a problem with the EGR. When I start it, white smoke comes from the tailpipes, and it smells of gas bad! Starts with no problem though....but as soon as I get on the road and push the gas it stumbles and almost feels like it isn't getting any fuel. The idle is horrible, tried adjusting it by ear, but obviously I am not doing it right. Might also be a faulty TPS, don't have a voltmeter to test, but gonna go to Autozone to borrow theirs. I have watched numerous videos on "how to" and read until my eyes bleed...lol. Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated! Again, I am new to working on cars, but am not afraid to get dirty. I want to learn as much as possible. Thank you in advance.

You might want to take a look at your injectors. Sounds like they might be past their prime. If they are the originals, it might be worth it to replace them. My car had a similar issue and it turned out to be leaky injectors. I guess I should say my car had a lot of issues and replacing the injectors was one of many fixes.

Good luck with your project

Steve

Wouldn't hurt to check your fuel pressure too, while you're at it...my '89 RS as well as my '90 Jeep Cherokee were giving me grief with similar stumbling issues on acceleration, and with both vehicles it turned out to be the fuel pump operating at about 20-25% normal pressure. Good luck!

ohm your injectors and also you could possibly have a leaky injector. Check your plugs for gas.

Re: '87 Iroc hesitates when accelerated...Help Please

Thank you for the replies. The car won't even start now. I tried taking off the distributor cap, loosened one bolt, and couldn't get to the other one(wrong tools). so screwed that back in, and the car didn't start, been trying, but just revs, then nothing. I pulled all the spark plugs, 2 on the passenger side smelled like fuel bad when I pulled them, and both were all gunky..lol...loss for a better word. So could that mean bad injectors? I'm going to borrow a neighbors voltmeter to test, hopefully I can figure it out. I will post what I come up with.

Thank you again
Where are all the boys when you need them! Doesn't seem like anyone around here knows how to work on cars. I'm gonna figure it out, and show those boys what this girl can do! lol

You need a multimeter or an ohmeter. Test each injector with the car off. You could have an injector leaking also. You will need a 7/32 size socket to get the dist. cap off.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g8PdrT0MCU

Re: '87 Iroc hesitates when accelerated...Help Please

well, I got my car running again. Still have yet to test the injectors, but pulled the plugs, and the 3rd one from the front on the passenger side smelled like fuel, and was super gunky. So, I am thinking it has something to do with the injectors. The car was idling real high, my RPM's on the dash haven't worked since I bought the car last year, so I'm not sure the exacts...but it was almost at a racing idle. So much so that just after starting it, the car would start to overheat. I have been filling the overflow coolant at least every other day for the past 2 months....so a leak, I'm guessing . I checked all my vacuum hoses for a leak, and the ones from the canister to the EGR (I think) practically crumbled in my hands when rubbed on. I taped those with electrical tape (short on funds) started my car, and it idled and ran beautifully. Any ideas? Thank you again! I'm in Tomball, Tx. if anyone is near me, I would give anything to have you look at my car for me!

When you test the fuel pressure, do it at idle (36-43psi) & engine off (45-50psi & hold for awhile). This give you an idea if the injector(s) or the regulator are bleeding down.

I will def. do that tomorrow. One more question, when my car was so hot just at idle, I pulled off the oil cap to let it cool off, and saw a clay like substance around the cap, and also the PCV valve. Any ideas what that may be?
