valve covers off without removing AIR?

this is a 1986 lg4 all stock. Can the valve covers be removed without removing the AIR pipes on the manifolds?I got the valve cover loose on the drivers side but doesn't seem possible to remove it without taking the air injection plumbing off the manifold and seems the a/c is gonna be a problem.thanks...........well got the drivers side off and WOW.Should I not disturb the junk and gunk on top of the heads?I have heard of people using a shop vac to suck all the gunk out but once you start seems like you would have to get it all. This is a 150,000 mile motor that needs stem seals but the smoke from oil on the manifolds got old.Should I just put the valve cover gaskets on,leave the gunk alone and change the oil? Will be replacing motor soon.
