She just won't stay running!!
Ok, I got a 1992 Z28 5.0. As I was driving it, it just kept dying and stumbling. It barely runs and you cannot hit the gas without it dying. It was running rough even when idling. Sounded like the fuel pump was going out. So changed the fuel pump and the sending unit and the fuel filter was recently changed. Any ideas? All help is appreciated

Did you put a new strainer on with the new fuel pump, Is the SES light on? Did you check the timing, vacuum leaks.. etc...

yep, new strainer, no light on... From my knowledge there is no vacuum leak, And with the timing it sounds like it is in time. It just started doing this while i was going down the road
Re: She just won't stay running!!
Wow, this sounds exactly like my 92 Z28 5.0 when I first bought it......
but for me the gas gauge read 1/2 full when in reality i was on empty (all my third gens have bad gas gauges)... it would run enough at idle but moving the car caused the fuel pressure to drop when air got sucked it.
Have you checked you fuel pressure? Idle and when driving? What happens to the pressure when the car is shut off? I would start there.

How does the exhaust smell? Check your coolant temp sensor while you have your multimeter out.
Re: She just won't stay running!!
I was having a similar issue to yours. My problem was the pickup in the distributor was rusted all to hell and falling to pieces. Replaced the distributor and she runs great now. You can take off the cap and rotor and eye ball it in 10 minutes. It might be worth the time. I have heard (take that for what it's worth) that these type distributors are notorious for this type of behavior.
Re: She just won't stay running!!
for me..... i just had to add gas...problem went away.....!
it gave me steady and proper fuel pressure.....
The fuel pressure check is to be sure the regulator is doing its job properly. CHecking the rail pressure is to be sure the injectors are seeing the right pressure. I like to disconnect the supply hose and check pump output. Then reconnect and disconnect the return hose and check that flow. Could always have a faulty regulator.
I had similar problem with not being able to touch the gas (or clutch) without killing the car. Once my fuel pressure was correct, this went away. (Try going up the hill to my house with no clutch or gas!)
my car had sat for 6 years with the previous owner undriven. That said, as others said to test....I then tested more and found that: the TPS was not set right, the distributer not set right.
(Now i have to find out why my fuel pump is so loud...I can hear it over the exhaust of the car)

So I added gas.... Ran at idle for about a minute or two, but i couldnt hit the gas or it would die... Distributor is good cap is good and rotor is good... Maybe fuel pressure regulator? Are these hard to change?

Does it run better when it's cold? Did it die after the minute or two? Try unplugging the CTS, it's a two prong sensor on the front of the intake near the coolant port that feeds the throttle body. If it runs better unplugged, change the sensor.

Don't chase a problem by randomly changing out parts. Check the pressure with a gauge.

Re: She just won't stay running!!
Well for anyone who was wondering... I changed the ICM also. But still no luck. So what I was finally broke down and took it to a mechanic.... They told me the auto parts store gave me the wrong fuel pump... They gave me a fuel pump that was to small. The guy said he must have picked the wrong one up off the shelf. Thank everyone that tried to solve this dilemma
