Code 54, and FP Relay

Car is a 1988 5.7 TPI Firebird. It's the 350 since the 8th digit of the vin is an 8.

I currently have 2 codes left on my new-to-me L98 Firebird though I'm pretty sure why the first one is there.

The second code is a 54. I thoroughly search forums/etc. before asking a question but I've come across various pics/possible's so I'm asking here to make sure.

I believe my FP Relay is bad so I bought one to replace it with. It's a GM Relay part # 14089936 (which according to this forum correlates with the FP Relay found on late-model birds). Bought it because I heard that if the FP relay is bad, the car will still start with some cranking of the car and 5psi of oil pressure created. I don't hear the FP prime when I put the key to ON which also led me to believe this.

Now, I recently downloaded the FSM manual a member uploaded...but it's 1.8k pages and the electrical stuff I found doesn't look like mine which leads me to believe it's the 5.0 section (the manual is not in order). Also, random pictures online don't really help...they're of different years and most were for a corvette.

These 2 relays found against the driver side firewall are where my FP Relay is supposed to be located. Looking at the wires coming from the bottom, they don't look the same as those found on the replacement relay I purchased. So which one of these could it be?

I did however find 2 other relays near the front passenger side, front as in close to the headlights right by the intake. One of them has a matching number with that of the replacement relay. Though I'm sure some of these relays can be swapped in place for another, none of them are for my FP right?

Just want to take care of things to get rid of my codes. I'm on a 30-day temp tag after paying my registration since I still need to get it smogged.

the relay is the one on the bulkhead nearest to the brake booster. Ans yes this same relay is used in several applications.

Re: Code 54, and FP Relay

Thanks for the flow chart!

Weird after all the searches (on google even) I never got that page. I almost assumed the furthest inward was the MAF burnoff relay.

I just didn't want to the wrong relay (thinking it was for the FP) with no difference and rule out the FP relay being bad only because I tested the wrong one.

your burn off relay is the one that has all that crud on the bottom and the mounting tab is broke.

Re: Code 54, and FP Relay

Since I don't have time to troubleshoot and follow the guide to diagnosing the fuel pump/relay/etc I've got a quick question to make sure this is right.

So as I stated earlier, putting the key in the ON position I don't hear the fuel pump prime at all.

So I thought, hey it's the FP relay.

I replaced it with the one I bought (on ebay, part number shown above).

I turned the key ON and still didn't hear it prime, and when checking for engine codes I noticed something else (with the new-to-car-relay), only ONE electric fan was running. I replaced the relay with the original one, put the key ON as if checking for engine codes and both fans were running. Am I working on the correct relay to begin with?
