357 sbc build, wanna hit 12-13s in the 1/4

alright, i was just gonna slap together what i had, but ran the head numbers. I have those dreaded *** 462624 heads that people cant sell for 5 dollars on ebay. But first a tiny background:

I bought my 357 sbc four bolt main not to long after it was put together, from someone i personally know, and sells me good stuff. I picked it up for 400 dollars complete from carb to oil pan, in running condition. Came with a holley 650 vac secondary. I'm dropping this block into my 89 camaro and wanna run consistent 12-13's since its my first drag car. I'm trashing the heads, i'd like to stick to my other carb i have laying around which is a holley 700 dual feed vac sec or my 650 that came with it.

I'm not sure of the crank thats in it, couldn't find that info in my pile of receipts, all i found is they put in Sealed power speed pro hypereutectic pistons 4.040. that's all i really know other than the heads. I'm looking at pretty much a complete tear down and rebuild of this motor. it seems like everything done to this motor is just about one step above oem, so i wouldn't put to much stock into the crank being anything special. A round about starting point would be nice. Tranny and rear end gear is yet to be decided, however i will probably go straight for the powerglide transmission.

Stock-ish style crank/rods will be fine for a 12 second build. Same thing as my buddy's rebuilt L98. Reconditioned rods/crank but with new pistons. 12.2's at 112 mph all year long. Very fun car. 330whp.

Dont need much to get there. Recondition the bottom end if it needs it but sounds like its decent enough to handle the abuse.

Budget heads i'd run vortec irons. Set them up to handle abit more lift...using beehives helps. Assume this is a flat tappet cam motor? Then just up the cam to something like a XE274 type grind.... something in the 224/230 or 230/236 deg range at .050" lift.

performer RPM type intake for vortec heads and thats a low to mid 12 second combo all day long. Ofcourse it needs the right gear/rebuilt tranny with 3000-3200 ish stall and proper suspension and tire.

Thanks for the quick reply. bottom end is fresh. When i got the motor, it still had the break in oil in it. which carb would you use on that combo. And since your talking performer rpm intake i'd say neither one of these intakes would work.

You wont need a single plane for this. A good dual plane will work but not the stage 1 inake. Thats no better than a stock mild application. I'd use the larger 700 carb.

The summit stage 2 intake would work I bet. you want a idle to 6500 rpm range to get best performance out of this.

I had a friend who had a budget 355 motor using vortec heads, edelbrock performer rpm vortec intake, 750cfm double pumper carb, and a stock LT1 latemodel fbody camshaft in his 83 shortbed chevy pickup. It ran mid 13's at 100mph. In a thirdgen camaro it would maybe go high 12's as is. Now if you put in a real camshaft in that motor, something much better than a stock LT1 cam, it would definately go mid 12's or so.

Thats why I like the rpm intakes. They fit the powerband well and with a good 224 to 230 deg cam, you'll have a pretty powerful engine.

would you recommend this over the stage 2 summit? has the same operating range. And sorry you'll have to fill me on the xe274 cam, a link on summit or jegs would be nice.

i also failed to insert a major detail, i'm wanting this to be a street/strip car as well. so don't give me something to High perf that it can be taken to the street.

thanks all

If you do vortec heads, you'd need this intake

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7116/

Summit stage 2 will work if they have a vortec style. I cant find it but they have a stage 3 which is just the air gap version in which the plenum is isolated from the intake manifold with a nice air gap underneath. Helps with keeping air cold and may make more power

Cam can be something like these
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-242-2/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12-246-3/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-60103/

I really like that LUN-60103. Good duration for street/strip. The CCA-12-246-3 or aka the XE274 is also a very popular cam. Get you into the lower 12's and mean idle but still be driveable on the street.

I wouldn't waste your time with an old 2spd transmission, they're completely overkill, way oldschool and dated. Not to mention highly inefficient. At the least go pickup a good TH400 3spd trans if you plan on building a stouter motor in the future however a TH350 or 700r4 will work just fine for only 13's, allow better gearing, and rob less power and give you better fuel mileage.

Re: 357 sbc build, wanna hit 12-13s in the 1/4

okay, i'm very interested in going the vortec head route with the intake. but lets say i used that stage 1 summit or victor jr intake with this set of 305 heads i have laying around, which i heard function pretty well on a 350 with 2.02 intake valves. head number 14014416. would that along with one of those two intakes, and a new cam (recommend one please) get me mid-high 12's?

i know engine isn't everything when asking for et. i'm just looking for some generic replies so i get going in the right direction, you guys have been great keep the responses coming

Re: 357 sbc build, wanna hit 12-13s in the 1/4

Vic jr on 305 heads is a mismatch. You will not need a single plane for this motor and it will give up alot of low end power and driveability. Not good with a street car with carb.

If you revalved the 416 heads and had some work done to the bowl to take advantage of the larger valve, you'd spend more money than what you could have in a set of stock vortecs. LIkely make less power.

Just using box stock 416's on a 350 limits potential due to the smaller valves, I believe the stock valves are 1.84" in those? Not great for a 4" bore 350 motor. I dont think it be worth it to get the heads cut for larger valves.

It may be possible to squeeze a high 12 out of it with stock 305 heads with a good valve job and big cam, but a vortec car with smaller cam will be much more efficient and streetable.

Summit stage 1 intake will hurt power alittle in the higher rpm range over a stage 2/3 intake. I dont see why you are stuck on that intake. Do you already have it? Abit of port work to it and you may get enough power out of it to run a high 12. Again for similar money, why not start off with a better intake and make more power? Keep it simple and less work involved.

Re: 357 sbc build, wanna hit 12-13s in the 1/4

i have both of the intakes i referenced, they came with motors i bought. but looks like a new plan. i think i'm going to set the 357 on a stand and build it the right way, and drop the running 305 in my 3rd gen just to get my feet wet in the racing world.

thanks for all of the responses and great detail, i'll be sure to refer to that when i go buy parts for the 357 build when my tax return gets here

Intakes are easy to swap out. If you wanted you can try the vic jr or stage 1 intake, port matched to the heads and see where it gets you.

heads are alittle harder to change but still easily doable. I wouldnt waste my time with the 305 heads and just wait to pick up some vortec heads if going that route or save for a set of aluminums and up your goals to high 11's to low 12's
