Lg4 cam swap questions.
Hey everyone. I was wondering what a good cam choice would be for a carbed lg4. It has a catback exhaust, not sure if headers are stock or not. And yes i know dump the 305 for a (insert generic swap here.) but thats not in the budget at the moment. I would like to get at least some hp/torque gains but im looking more for the sound quality.

Re: Lg4 cam swap questions.
if sound quality is the main goal. check out comps ****** thumpr cams. i belive the lt1 cams are a popular roller cam swap for the 305s. not a radical cam for a 350, but plenty for a 305.

what ever you have in there now, 86 could be either or. youll have to pull the intake off and see.
Re: Lg4 cam swap questions.
86 should still be a flat tappet cam. 87 was the oddball year where a carb engine in an F-body might have had a roller installed.
If you're looking to use the factory computer controlled QJet and distributor to run the thing you need to keep the cam mild. Remember where you're starting from- the stock LG4 cam is known as the "peanut cam" around this board for good reason. It' got duration of 179*/192* @ .050 and lift well under .400" on both sides. Even the mildest performance cam is a BIG change vs. stock.
On the cheap, a Summit house brand K1102 cam kit (Edebrock Performer cam) can really wake up an LG4, especially if the stock LG4 exhaust is upgraded to something better. It's not a fire-breather cam (204*/214* @ .050) but it's a BIG step up from the stock LG4 cam. Big "seat of the pants" improvement in power pretty much everywhere in the rev range.
No, it will not make "lumpy cam" sounds. It'll idle pretty much like stock. Healthy stock. It may not be what you WANT, but if you're planning to run it with computer controls it's what you NEED.

Re: Lg4 cam swap questions.
Hey thanks you guys for the info. I'm not super worried about the lumpy sound but if i'm looking to replace the cam why not try to find one. I'm gonna have to look into the kit from summit. Again thanks, i appreciate the help and info.
