Need help... Car not starting

Hey guys... So my car won't start up and here are the symptoms;

Lights work and there is no clicking noise when tryng o turn key over...
The dash guages don't move a bit....
Could it be the key?

So could the starter be the cause or perhaps ignition switch? It wouldn't start this mornin so I am goingto take a look this evening after work. I have to work on it in a parking lot so I hope I can get it fixed soon. Hopng for some good advice... I only have two vehicles between myself and the misses... Was selling my truck and had it sold but now I have to wait til the car is fixed... Ugh

Re: Need help... Car not starting

do the radio dome lights work? if lights, etc are working then i would say the starter is your problem. if the lights are very dim or barely working then your battery is probably to weak to start the car. so my suggestion to you is if you have juice (lights working etc) then try hitting starter with a hammer and try starting so you can get it home. if not enought juice from battery jump start with another vechicle try starting...if still nothing also hit starter with hammer and see what happens...most likely starter is bad though. imo... let me know more symptoms. good luchk

Re: Need help... Car not starting

Depending on how cold it is where you are could be "low cold cranking power". If your headlights work but look dim you MIGHT get lucky and may only need a battery.

Try hooking up jumper cables for about 15 min. and see what happens to rule out the battery..... Then go from there.

After a long jump and still no go.......... Starter or bad connection.

Re: Need help... Car not starting

Sorry for short reply... Using phone at work. No checked cables to see if it was a low connection but the lights are real bright so I dnt thnk it is the battery. I just didn't know if a starter going bad would effect the instrument panel...

When you turn on the ignition does the key get any resistance like it does when it works normally or does it seem loose and unattached?

It has resistance. I'm going to check it out when I head there in an hour. I'll check the starter with a few taps and see what it does. I don't think its the alternator... the lights work and are bright but I will check it out as well.

I've had starters go out, but I can't ever remember the guages not working or dash lights not coming on... thats what is throwing me off. But I'm just talking right now... didn't get a real chance to do anything but try to start it... wiggle cables around battery... and check that it was in gear... and then I had to leave.

I'll update soon

Re: Need help... Car not starting

If you have a VATS car, check the starter enable relay. Drivers side left kick panel. Mine would do something similar and that was the fix.

There was a problem with the battery connections, but thought I remedied this with some terminal covers to tighten the connection. The brake lights stay on, so when I park the car I have to pop off the battery cable, and then reconnect it when I'm ready to drive again. Think I've worn down the battery trying to get it started, so I'm gonna charge it up and check which gauges, radio, dome light, etc. Also, I tried moving the steering wheel, but that didn't do anyting. It's an automatic. Can I try to push it to start it, or would this do anything? Off to tighten, check, push & pray. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Just started my own biz- Silkscreen T's & ad specialty. I'm not in the financial situation to send my baby to the shop right now. Thanks to all for any help. Julia

O.K. Baby doesn't care much for wet, and it's been raining and I drove allover hell yesterday in it, so I'm gonna let her dry out for a while and I'm gonna try to locate a helpful neighbor to help me boost her up some. Any replies would be helpful. Until later...........HELP!!

Re: Need help... Car not starting

Check for any loose wiring under the dash on the driver's side. Mine wouldn't start, had the same symptoms you described. My lights would turn on and my dash would light up, but it wouldn't even try to turn over. Turned out is was just a loose wire under the dash.

Thanks, when I get it charged up since I ran out the juice foolin' with it- I'll try that. Recently, I was fooling around under there looking for the little piece of rubber that brakes the connection to the brake lights when you let off the brakes-brakes stay on so I may have loosened a wire or two. Thanks for the input. I'll report any developments. Thx. Julia
