Hissing sound from radio console?

I just bought an '88 camaro with a 2.8 v6. When at idle there is a hissing noise coming from the radio console area. If i give the car a little throttle the hisssing lessens. It does this while driving also. It hisses noticibly unless I'm giving it gas. Also, when I turn the heater or A/C on, the hissing increases. ( The A/C doesn't blow, and the heater only works on defrost). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TGO.

Vac leak at the selector, which is a common issue with our cars.

Thanks for the help. Where exactly is the selector? And any tips on how to replace it?

Back pass side of the HAVC. Pull the unit out and you'll see the vac selector with its vac lines.

I do not know. I haven't had the chance to tear mine down to check it out. To be honest, I'm not sure of the best route to get to it. If you happen to do it before me please post on here and let me know.

Re: Hissing sound from radio console?

Here's what you need, though I'm uncertain whether if still available from GM:

Valve Vac Sel GM part # 16032395.

A simple job. Remove the black plastic bezel that surrounds the HVAC and radio and take a peek.

Re: Hissing sound from radio console?

Iv got a similar issue but it's only when I change the selector for what I want then I get in and change it for the first time, after that I never hear it again and I still have all the selectors and speeds. So I don't understand it

GM no longer offers the part, and no aute-store has been able to order it for me. . I'm going to try pull-a-part this weekend maybe I'll have some luck.

That is normal operation. IT will make a "hiss" noise when you change the selection, sometimes

Re: Hissing sound from radio console?

I actually had the same issue on my 92 firebird when I bought it. I didn't see any point replacing the whole thing. So I went to lowes and bought one of those plastic push locking dowels, or whatever you wanna call it. Here's a link to what it looks like, the only thing thats different is the one I bought was a little longer.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_138263-37672-881201_0__?productId=3012793&Ntt=push+fastener&pl=1¤tURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dpush%2Bfastener&facetInfo=

I took that home, compared it against the broken peice that had been in mine, cut it to length. Then I shaved off the little locking tabs up until maybe 2-3 of them at the end, that way it would lock in when pushed. Put everything back together, and it all fit flush and fine. Started the car and there's no hissing sound at all now.

Anyways, best of luck to you, if you need any more info, just let me know.

I checked it out, and it does show it listed as a valid part. Too bad they want $417 for it after shipping, handling and processing.

Re: Hissing sound from radio console?

Apparently something is amiss with the web site. Note the cost of a combination valve in the link below (post #7):

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...2-1le-j65.html

Perhaps a call to the company would set the issue straight.

Re: Hissing sound from radio console?

Unfortunately all 3 of the switches/valves inside the HVAC unit are now DISCONTINUED by GM. I was alerted to this by a customer that was in need of the GM 16014416 switch. I have all the three switches/valves that are controlled by the HVAC in stock now.

GM 16032395: A/C HEATER MODE CONTROL VALVE
GM 16062091: HEATER WATER CONTROL VALVE
GM 16014416: A/C HEATER MODE SELECTOR SWITCH
