My car dies....not very often

When my car dies, im usually stopped at a light and just about to move and engine cuts out...but i still have all battery power inside the car, but not enough to start and i just jump it with my jump pack i always have in the back and it starts right back up...

Its done this 3 times....It is a common thing...usually with a week in between...

Im thinking its the alternator starting to go because my battery voltage meter its constantly moving when engine is running and the alternator is dirty (even after cleaning)

Just looking for some opinions, ill be replacing the alternator soon.

I got a 1988 Camaro 305

Thanks,
-Brent

can always pick up a replacement starter for practically nothing. As long as you dont drive it in rain or dirty roads you should be able to return it if your problem does not go away.

it could also be your battery. I'm not a car genious but I remember back to my first camaro. If the car got hot and turned it off I would have to wait a little bit before starting it again. The battery was weak and didnt give me enough cranking amps while engine was hot to roll the motor over. You're jumper pack is probably giving the car enough amps to roll over your engine. After I picked up a new battery my issues went away.

Just another thing you could look at too.

I have a new battery so cant be that... and the starter is only in use when starting the car if im not mistaken....im usually just waiting for a light to change and rolling into the throttle when it dies....

I'd say something is wrong with the charging system. I'd say replacing the alternator is definitely your best course of action. You are right also, the starter would have nothing to do with your car dying like that. Your battery obviously isn't keeping enough charge because the alternator isn't recharging accordingly. If you hadn't already already replaced the battery, I would have also suggested replacing that along with the alternator if you can.
