Horsepower estimate
Horsepower estimate
I was wondering if anybody can give a an estimate as to how much horsepower I am pushing with this engine combination. I have a 89 formula that had a tbi 305 engine in it. I pulled it out and put a 350 out of a 79 truck in it. The motor was bored to a 355 and all the bottom end is pretty much stock. It has edelbrock cam duration 278/288, lift .420/.442, edelbrock dual plane performer intake, and edelbrock 600cfm carb. It has longtube headman headers and is a true dual exhaust with 40 series flowmaster mufflers. I was also curious as to how much hp will I gain if i go and do the vortec heads swap since they are pretty cheap to come by. Thanks for any help.

Re: Horsepower estimate
your probably at 240 at the wheels,With vortecs you should be up to 260+.

Re: Horsepower estimate
You have kind of a strong cam for a low compression engine, big chambers & dished pistons if stock, the Vortecs would be a good choice but even with them I'll bet you'll only be at about 200 or a little more.
If you go with flat tops with the proper compression hight which as I remember is 1.560 for a standard small block, that puts the piston .020 down the hole with say an .018 shim head gsk. which makes the quench area work properly you should be at close to 300.
My last 24Hrs of Lemons engine used TRW flat tops, World 68cc heads, 262 Duration 421-444 lift with 1.5 shortys & 3" mandrel Flowmaster exh, Edelbrock performer with a 730 Quadrajunk carb, made 218 chassis HP at Thunderhills chassis dyno.
