No spark after ignition plug replacement?
Decided to replace the black plug that goes from the coil to ignition module in the distributor with a new AC delco since the new one was barely hanging on. Started the car drove around the block since its NOP and sits in the garage. I went ahead and spliced the new plug in with a soldering iron and heat shrink wrapped it i tested it to make sure it had no breaks and it was good. Went ahead and tried starting the engine and it would crank fine but it wouldn't start checked the a plug and it had no spark. I inspected all connection and they looked all good and no start.
The damaged plug

1989 iroc 5.7 tpi - stock
1.) Replaced the coil pack with a new one: still no spark.
2.) Replaced ignition control module: Still no spark.
3.) Inspected all connection and looked for possible pinched wires and no spark.
4.) Out of frustration i decided to switch the wires on the black plug hoping that i might have accidentally reversed them while splicing and repairing the plug, went and cranked the engine and immediately their was a huge backfire with smoke from the engine bay, totally freaked out and called it a night.
My Theory)After some thought is it possible that the plug was reversed and the reason their was what sounded like a backfire was because the whole day i had been attempting to start the engine with no luck leaving the cylinder's drenched with gasoline i am a little hesitant to attempt to crank it again i don't want to possibly damage something major if i haven't already done so.
What are your thoughts? how do i make sure the cylinders are not drenched in gasoline if my theory is correct
Appreciate your help in advance.

Re: No spark after ignition plug replacement?
Pull the coil wire out of the distributor and place it close to a ground. Crank the engine for a sec or two with the throttle wide open (the engine won't start with the coil wire out of the distributor). If you see spark, you're good.
Yeah, I think you probably have fuel puddled in the combustion chambers.
If you crank the engine with the throttle full open, this is "clear flood" mode. This shuts off the injectors. You'll probably have to do this when you replace the coil wire and try to start it again.
