My car stopped starting about a couple of months ago. Personal life took a nose dive, school work mounted and time got away from me.

It's an 87 Iroc so there is no vats. I took a look tonight and heard a clicking noise when I turned the switch. I had my daughter turn it while I listened and found that it came from two little fuses(?) over by the battery. Thing is, when I unplug one it still does it, plug it back in and take the other out, it still does it. But if I take both out, the clicking stops!

They are siemens vf4-45f11. I pretty sure they are fuses, but does this sound like what would be stopping the car from starting.

Does anyone know if these things can keep the car from starting? How to check them? And if so, where is the best place to get them?

Quick responses wouldn't hurt! This is my DD and I've been bumming rides for too long.

Thanks in advance!!

They are relays; fuses don't " click"
Depending what their function is ;many relays are turned on ( the click) when the key turned

OK, so would that mean that they are both bad??

No , the click shows they are working correctly;
if they don't click when they should you have problems

You say your car "doesn't start"

What does it do??
Does it crank over?
Does it make any signs like it wants to start like cough / splutter /backfire /etc ????

It doesn't turn over or anything. It just clicks. I tested the battery and it is good. The only sound is the clicking from those two relays. It doesn't drain when I turn the key? I have jump starter and it doesn't help it either, so I'm kinda lost!

Sounds like your starter.Relays may be fuel pump or cooling fans.If you can get to the starter tap it with a hammer while having someone try to start it.Only hit the body of the starter. If it works you need a new one. Also if you don't have the factory terminals at the battery check and make sure they are tight an clean.

You have to make sure your getting 12volts down to the purple wire on the starter.
Check all your fuses 1st, then check for 12 volts on the purple wire.

Nothing!! I tried it before, but thought I'd give it another go. Thanks though.

Damn I wish I could get this thing going. It kind of happened out of the blue too! Had to know it would be at the worst possible time!

Put a screwdriver ( carefully so as not to short to anything else)
between the big terminal and small terminal on the starter solenoid
Does starter work?

Ok, if I need to do it with a partner, I lost my partner to the bed! (school in the morning for the kiddo!) and I'll give it a go in the morning before school. If not, then let me know and I'll give it try real quick.

Thanks.

I bet it's the starter, but it may also be the neutral safety switch under the shifter bezel. I had a problem with my starter when it was starting to go bad and when turning the key, nothing..On a separate occasion, I had a problem where my neutral safety switch came out of alignment and when turning the key, not a peep. My friend got my car started by putting the shifter in 1st and with his foot on the brake, the car started right up. Try moving your shifter down from park, and with your foot on the brake, try to start the car. Try this in each gear position and see if that's the problem.

I know it's been a while, but I'm back at it! I've verified that I have power to the starter (12v) (but not with the purple wire, nothing there), power at the ignition, power when i turn the key, power at the nss on the yellow wire when turning the key, but not at the purple wire. Does this mean the NSS is bad?

And if so, when I jump it with a jumper wire, shouldn't it start or try to start??
