FUEL GUAGE SENDER DEAD AND GONE

MY FUEL GUAGE SENDER IS IN ROUGH SHAPE (IT SAT IN SOME SUPER NASTY GASOLINE FOR YEARS - THINGS MELTED). A NEW ONE IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND A LITTLE HARD TO FIND. I COULD CLEAN OUT THE LINES, RUN NEW WIRING AND INSTALL A NEW PUMP NO PROBLEM, BUT THE ACTUAL GUAGE SENDER IS MISSING A CONTACT AND ARM FLOAT IS GONE. CAN I SWITCH IT OUT WITH SOMETHING FROM ANOTHER YEAR THAT IS NOT SO EXPENSIVE??

Re: FUEL GUAGE SENDER DEAD AND GONE

Had to go used. I found some GM parts websites that supposedly had new ones but after I completed the order, the next day I got an email stating that part has been discontinued (no $hit). I found several used ones available on car-part.com. Everything I have seen about this sender states that it was used in 1982-83 camaro/firebird with 2.5l & 5.0l fuel injected engines. I took the actual guage sender apart, cleaned the contacts with emory cloth and made sure resistance = 90ohms full and moved closer to zero when lowering to empty. Cleaned steel lines, ran new wiring, and installed new pump and hoses - looks great (going in the tank on monday).
