car will not stay running!
I have an 87 iroc 5.7 I just bought off of a friend. it has been sitting for 3 years with a bad alternator and bad battery. I have replaced those things.
Now i start the vehicle and it will idle fine then goes rough and then dies within 10 seconds. If i give it any amount of gas it dies INSTANTLY. I did a fuel pressure test and it is at about 48psi at idle.
i pulled the spark plugs and they are wet with gasoline and with a coat of black that just wipes right off.. Im not exactly sure how to check for correct spark besides just pulling a plug and watching for spark. but when i tried that i held it with boot pliers and still got shocked. so i do not want to try that again. it also has an msd 6al box with painless wiring all connections look good.
I also noticed the adjustable fuel pressure regulator has no vacuum line connected to it. the tube that should be was taken out of it and the port on the intake was plugged off. im not exactly sure why that is. but my friend said he got the car like that and i have seen the car run before. so if that means anything.
they also blocked the egr with a plate and i found the vacuum line going to the solenoid from the solenoid was ripped in half so i just plugged it off at the throttle body. Not sure if that is the right way or not.
just lots of things im not sure of what the previous owners were thinking.
but i really do need input of what it may be. thanks

The line plugged off on the regulator is a pressure line if you used forced induction. No worries about that.
That EGR could cause issues.

Thanks. I removed the solenoid and plugged the throttle body vacuum since the egr was blocked off anyway. Still has same symptoms. Then I tested the ignition coil and the resistance was low and the coil was singed and melted on the outside. I replaced it and it idles longer now by a minute. But it still stalls instantly with throttle.
Another concern I have is if I place my hand under the intake toward the throttle I feel a strong gust of air but cannot pinpoint its source.
My symptoms suggest a vacuum ok but where! everything is plugged or seems to be connected.
And now seeing that coil it is making my head spin.

I had a similar issue. Does the car smell like gas? if so, the fuel regulator could be leaking. That fixed it for me.
Re: car will not stay running!
Thanks for the replies guys. I both suggestions but everything was ok. I swapped the aftermarket maf with the stock one that was laying in the trunk and started right up. So happy right now :-)

I was just thinking MAF as I read this thread. The vacuum line to the FPR is important as the factory fuel curve relies on reduced fuel pressure at low engine loads and idle. You may be running rich without it.
