305 engine build advice

I am planning on rebuilding my 305 TPI engine. I want to keep the original engine for the car for various reasons.

I am thinking of buying a stroker kit to make it a 335. To go along with this I want to do a cam swap. This is the biggest thing that I am unsure about. I understand what a cam does and how it works in general but don't know what specs to look for. I like the idea of the full kits from comp cams that come with everything like the k08-464-8. I don't know if that would be a good choice of if I would like one of the larger ones.

I also plan on having the heads ported and polished. While I have everything apart I plan on doing whatever I can for the internal part of the engine. I will be looking at doing headers and a cold air intake also. My car has a cat back flowmaster exhaust installed.

Any advice on cam selection, and what else I can do would be appreciated. I don't want to hear to buy a 350 because that is not what I want to do.

Re: 305 engine build advice

Get a cam that operates in the same range as you intake, basically, idle to about 5000 RPM. You can call the various manufacturers, tell them what you got, and they can make a recommendation as well.

Hey nova983 I also have a 305 tpi on my 89 caprice I want to keep the engine the same as you do. I don't know where to start, Im new to this and that 335 kit I've never heard about that, everyone just tells me to swap engines. I'm thinking now of looking further into your idea. What you think I should do

Re: 305 engine build advice

This will be my first complete rebuild myself so I've been doing a lot of research. So far I've found that the stroker kit is about $600 starting price, and you can add upgrades to it and extra parts. I know that the heads will need the port work to help increase the flow to get more air in and out. I am still doing some research and figuring out what cam i'm going with. I'm currently deployed so the research is being done when I have time. I will be discussing with a local place for having the machine work done and about some of the choices I want to make to get there opinion about the overall combination. I'm just trying to hash out a lot now so I can try to hit the ground running when I get back.

Re: 305 engine build advice

Stroking the 305 is the exact same as stroking a 350. You just have to make sure all the internal parts clear.

Porting the heads are easy to do. All you need is a good air compressor, a die grinder, and carbide tips (I used the kit from Eastwood).

A 335 is a cheap way to make some more torque in a 305, but you are limited in horsepower due to bore size and intake valve limitations. Don't let anyone talk you out of your build.

I recently rebuilt my 305, without it being properly tuned, it is very quick for what it is.

My build is in my signature - good porting pics.

by looking to stroke the engine it is no longer "the original engine"

If your reason for keeping the original is because you think it will be a collector car some day..............perhaps, but I'll be dead and buried for some time before then

As you do the research, and price all the actual machine work you will need, not what an anonymous forum poster tells you, I also suggest you do a cost benefit analysis of hwat it will cost, where you'll be and then find out what it would cost if you went for 20- 50 cubic inches more

also, you don't need to get as radical with cams as displacement increases (unless you want to)

Re: 305 engine build advice

Do 1 or 2 think keep motor swap it out for somthing better or do the 305. If u want the block untouched use stroker kit just don't bore it. I'm sure u want to be on the mild side some new heads intake valve 1.94 exh 1.50 new intake hsr mini ram or what ever fits u cam I would go with a cam on the gm zz4 specs a tune is a must or with your stock set up procharger it would prob be cheaper
