91 z28 running rough

Alright I know usually your suppose to start off with a tune up before trying to diagnose a problem but my first question is I know the car is a v8 but I don't know if its a 305 or 350 do I need to know that when I go into pick up the stuff or is the plugs distributor cap and all that stuff the same?

Now the problem I'm having with the car is that when driving at low speeds or at a stop it seems to stumble(can hear the engine drop a bit and then it seems to come back and it seems like it wants to die) and times where I've been in town driving ill be at a light and the car will die, i starts up right away again, could this be that it needs a tune up or is this something more in depth?

Thanks for help in advance, SweetblueZ28

also if I need to clarify something ill try not really a car guru guy

Re: 91 z28 running rough

Well if I remember right, from what I was told by a buddy, with the 305 the oil dipstick will be on the right side of the motor. The 350 will have the dipstick on the left. When standing in front of the car looking at it. And as for your problem it sounds like a fuel issue. Try a fuel filter. Easy and cheap. Then check your wires. Old, warn, burn or scorch marks. Plugs as well. See if they are clean or have corrosion/damage, build up or anything unusual on them.

Re: 91 z28 running rough

What kind of fuel pump do you have? Electric or mechanic? If it is electric then yes it will stop the fuel and only leak a little of what's in the lines. if not then you will have to pinch a line or find a way to lightly plug the ends long enough to swap the filter. It doesn't take that long to accomplish, as long as you have the equipment to get your car up off the ground enough.

My 305 has a dipstick on the left when looking at it from the front.

I'm guessing your car is 100% stock.
Do yo have a 350 or 305? check your Vin and your RPO codes.
Both 350s and 305s have the dipstick on the same side, it just depends on what year of a motor you have.
Factory roller cam motors have the dipstick on the pass side and 86ish an older motors have it on the dr side.
If you don't know much about your car, pickup a FACTORY service manual from Helm Inc.
Now, your problem, I would start by asking your milage, Ohm checking your injs, checking fuel PSI, new fuel filter and a general tuneup.
I would put my money on the injs being bad, weak fuel pump or even a dizzy that needs some parts.
You won't know until yo do some tests. People on the net can guess all year long but you need to go do some testing. Don't become a parts changer.
Good luck

Re: 91 z28 running rough

Try some throttle body cleaner first of all, it's 5 bucks and usually solves problems like these.

Yea don't quote me completely. This was to the best of my knowledge. But I'd definitely start with the cheaper ways of figuring out what's wrong and fixes. But hey, that's what these forums are for. To make sure you get the correct answer and diagnosis.

Re: 91 z28 running rough

Ok I got a update after being out of town and finally got home this weekend to get it done and I got the fuel filter changed. Now when I checked the plugs and wires they looked like they were new. Now when I'm cruising around slowly I haven't had it die on me like it was before dosen't zerg like it was. But when I was backing it into my garage to make sure there was no leak from the fuel filter it died on me, so I started it back up again and here little while later I went back out and it died again. Anyone got a idea of whats going on now?

Re: 91 z28 running rough

What is it doing when it dies? Just split second dies, or bogs out and dies. Or what?
