383 Heads

Im looking for your opinions on heads for my 383 stroker. The bottom end is built with speed pro forged pistons that are spec'ed to make 10.93 CR with 58cc heads and 8.99 CR with 76cc heads. I am looking to run pump gas in this build and looking to make 400-450HP with the potential to upgrade in the future. My budget on heads is $1000. I am looking for new not used. I was looking at trickflow, dart, world, vortec, etc. Basically I would like to hear from you guys who have heads you like or just have info. Im leaning away from the vortecs just because of the .450 max lift. Look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Thanks

Vortecs are easily modified for more lift but their claim to fame is excellent flow #'s at lower lifts

Vortecs make good power for those on a budget and probably as good as or better
than alot of the cheapo alum heads in the price range you are only looking to spend

Re: 383 Heads

I agree with vetteoz Vortecs are easily modified . And if your looking for 450 hp. out of a 383 and still run pump gas they are a reasonable choice. It'll come down to your cam spec. and valve train assembly. What allso anyone would need to know is are you going injected or carb.
Good luck with your build

Re: 383 Heads

The motor will be topped with a holley 750dp. I really dont want to modify new heads. I would rather pay a few extra buck to get heads that will except high lift cams if I choose to take that direction at some point. I did see that SD does modify stock vortec valve trains to accept high lift. However, I was unable to find them on their site (awaiting info back from them). I was leaning towards the Trick flow 23 degree Kenny Duttweiler heads. They come right in at $1k. Anyone running them?

Re: 383 Heads

Well since spring is upon us Im thinking of slapping the stock heads back on so I can at least drive it. Im gonna throw a mild cam in it. Let me ask you, I checked out the stock heads I pulled off and the casting numbers are 3898920. I have looked everywhere for info on these but cant find exact specs on this casting number. The valves measure 2.02in and 1.6 exhaust and someone put screw in studs on them. Are these heads worth anything or are they just boat anchors? Thanks

Re: 383 Heads

The vortec heads should be easy to find on the SD site. Just put vortec into their search function. I'm fairly certain they're less than 1000. Vortecs are definitely good heads. I had a vortec 350 with a mild cam (voodoo 60101, about the most lift you can do with unmodded vortecs) and that firebird no doubt was faster than my vette.

Re: 383 Heads

I have decided to keep the stock heads for now. I may upgrade to vortecs in the near future but the budget just got pretty tight and I will have to put off the big ticket items so I can get the car back on the road.
Thanks Guys
