New Cam Selection?

I recently discovered I have a bad lifter on cylinder 5 exhaust. The lifter is pretty concave, enough to hold a few drops of oil if put on the surface. So now I'm going to replace the cam and lifters and was seeing if anyone has some input on what to run with my current setup. The cam I'm running now is the Comp Cams Magnum 292H. 244/244 duration and .501 lift. I've been running it for a few years and thought there may be some new cams out that would give me better performace. Heres a run down of my setup.

78 chevy 350 block (standard block, not bored out)
9.72:1 compression
1.5 Harland Sharp roller rockers
Dart Pro-1 Aluminum Heads Part#11321111. 2.02/160 valves, 64cc
Dual plane air gap style manifold
Pro Systems 780 cfm mechanical sec.
MSD Pro billet dist. with 6A box
Headers with 3" Y to Flowmaster Dual exhaust

This is in my 88 IROCZ with a 700R4 with 3500 lock-up stall and 4.11 posi trac rearend. Car has full interior and is a street car. Weekend and nice weather cruiser. I'm looking for suggestions on staying hydraulic and maybe going roller.

Re: New Cam Selection?

Comp Cams recommended part#12-250-3. 240/246, .507/.510 with 110 LSA and Lunati recommended voodoo part#60105. 241/249, .525/.546 with 110 LSA. Is anyone running these one of these cams or have any input?

Re: New Cam Selection?

Both of those recommendations pretty much pass the smell test... they should make a little more power than the one you had, but in about the same general RPM range.

Depending on your valve spring setup, a good roller equivalent to those would be the XR282HR 12-432-8. It looks on paper to be a little smaller but typically a hyd roller "looks", to the engine, about 10 - 12° "bigger" than a flat-tappet with the same duration #s. The springs that would have come on the heads from Dart (Comp 981 if memory serves) aren't adequate for that cam; you'll want to step them up to the 986 or 987.

You might even want to consider REALLY stepping up to the plate with a small street solid roller like the XR280R 12-771-8 or XR286R 12-772-8. In that case you'll DEFINITELY need more valve spring. The ones Dart would have put on there for a solid roller (954) are probably a bit much, go with the 977 instead. Consider paying the extra $35 or whatever it is these days to have it custom-ground on a -9 (billet) core instead of the -8 (cast) core. If you do that, use the 954 springs like Dart supplies on those heads when ordered set up for a SR cam.
