Ticking coming from behind radio/under shifter
I've been hearing a ticking noise coming from behind the radio/under the shifter console. (I know it has nothing to do with the radio) The noise will happen randomly as I'm driving and can last from 10 seconds to minutes. The noise will go away when I slow down under 25 mph but not if I shift into neutral. The noise rarely happens when idling, usually when I'm driving. The sound is a fast clicking that fades back and forth from louder to softer.
One time, I heard the noise and shifted into neutral but it was still there, so I reved the engine while coasting and the ticking got faster with the rpms, not my speed.
I don't know what in the world this could be... Any ideas?
Thanks.

OK you have an automatic so you need to get under your car a take off the inspection cover between your trans. and motor, get a good light and look around in there. Maybe a bolt is coming loose on the torque converter or something look around and let us know. Remember not to trust the jack you need to use jack stands also.

No change in performance, just irritating. Sound occurs just like mentioned above, sometimes a few seconds, other times for several minutes - then disappears.
Fades louder to softer and goes faster with RPM's, even if I coast in neutral and rev.
In the recent past, I have had to replace the pick up coil in the distributor. Also replaced the rotor and Ignition control module.
Could the aftermarket pick up coil cause this? My question is this: Why intermittant? What would make this sound just occur OCCASIONALLY?
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated -- hopefully someone on this forum has experienced and SOLVED this mystery!

SOLVED! The culprit: Mechanical Fuel Pump. Replaced with new Carter fuel pump and new push rod....all ticks are gone!
