coolant temp sensor

I have an 87 formula with 305 and 5speed. From what I can gather the 5 speed it has is a T5? And the 305 is well im not sure....

Car has been sitting for quite a few years but driven or at least started every once in a while just because. My temp gauge is not working currently and there is a sensor that is not plugged in because one of the prongs broke off. It looks to be original so im not surprised. I believe it is on the inlet to the water pump. Its a little screw in type. What is this and where can I get a new one from? Autozone and those stores dont seem to have a coolant temp sensor or anything like that. And those guys are clueless about looking up things in a book.

I am 90% sure this is why my temp gauge is not working. Am I right in thinking this? Or close anyway?

Thanks for any help.

Ethan

Re: coolant temp sensor

The 5 speed is a T5, the 305 is a small block chevy.

The temperature gauge sender is in the driver side head between the #1 and #3 cylinders. The temperature sensor for the computer is on the waterneck.

Re: coolant temp sensor

Thanks for your response.

Im not sure my computer is doing much right now as I have the HEI coil in cap w/ vacuum advance distributor (not sure if its the right one or if that matters, it is from a small block chevy though) and a edelbrock manual secondary carb. So this sensor is most likely not needed? Am I correct in assuming this?

The gauge on the cluster for temp...I would assume that it takes its signal from the sender on the side of the block? Maybe I can check the connection there. There are so many sensors and harnesses unplugged its hard to tell what is going on.

Thanks again

Re: coolant temp sensor

Coolant temperature sensor isn't needed if the computer isn't functional.

The gauge sender is in the head, not the block.
