88 camaro tbi will not start

So long story my friend and I pulled his beat 305 tbi and did a cheap rebuild. We put a new Howards cam in with new hydraulic lifters (changed from roller cam to hydraulic), lapped the valve with new seals, new distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, coil, wires, stage 4 high rise intake with carb to tbi kit, and full gasket replace.

Now to the point we can not get it to run. It will crank and kinda fire and back fire some times we get fire out of the tbi ever once in awhile not all the time. We have reset the timing over 20 times now. We can get it to run if we hold the flap open a bit and have really bad retard in the timing (about 35-40 degrees). We got it to run at 0 degrees but with wide open throttle it will not go over 2000 rpms. With the retard timing it runs misses a little but will not idle. I have spent some time looking online and talking to some old timers about this and we have tried several different things to get it to run and nothing. Also to add we did disconnect the brown wire for the timing the name slips my mind what it is called. Please any help would be great and appropriated.

Please do to flame me for the mods list or what we have done it was a shot in the dark that we thought it would work out fine.

Did you check and make sure at TDC the rotor on the distributor is pointed at number 1 cylinder on the CAP? you may be a tooth off. That connector is called the EST bypass connector <or set base timing connector> Also if your sure about the dizzy physical timing being right, did you double check for crossed wires? 5 and 7 can be easily goofed even by pros?

Yes we have set TDC correct. We pulled the distributor rotate the motor till TDC and point the rotor to #1 piston. Just to add we also pull the #1 plug out to feel for the burst of air in the compressor stroke. We started putting on wires one by one and all are number 1-8.

Have you re-checked the lash adjustment to make sure its right, along with the rocker arms to make sure no push rods are bent or rocker arms are too tight. And how certain are you that the distributor itself is good? Is it the same unit off the car originally? What does the timing mark look like when you hit with a timing light. Is it solid, or does it move a bit? Is the PCV valve sticking? Have you checked the vacuum lines? Last but certainly not least, how certain are you that the timing chain marks lined up when it was installed? Not trying to insult or overwhelm you, but with a fresh rebuild like this, sometimes even the best can miss something that makes them cuss like crazy when they realize it...

Lol, missed that. Still, I got 3 bad distributor's once, and his symptoms sound just like the ones I experienced. If he has the original unit, I'd say give it a whirl and see if it runs better. Just my

Always sucks when you buy something new and shiny that instead of making you smile makes you scratch your head and say, "wtf?"

Re: 88 camaro tbi will not start

It is a life time distributor so ill just take it back and get a new one say it was bad. We did do a down grade do to we ordered the wrong cam from summit. We repalced the roller lifters with Flat Tapet lifters and the cam is for FT lifters just so we have that clear the push rods are also the longer ones needed for the FT lifter not the short ones for the roler set up. We really want to get this going soon.
