Jus bought an iroc ,, quick question on starting it
So , i had bought an 85 iroc, carb 5.0 about a month ago from my
Freinds pops,, He had let it sit for about 7 years in which it hasent been
Started since , i trailered it home ,, and u kno did the basic B/s on the car
Like changed the oil, spark plugs and wires,, drain the fuel from the mechanical
Fuel pump, put a new fuel filter in the carb,, Now i understand there is probably bad fuel in the tank,, So i understand you guys would probably say drop the tank but i really dont want to go through the trouble,, until i know it starts,, of cutting the exaust to get to the tank because its all rusted to the muffler in which even when i hit it with a hammer i still cant get it to budge,, Would it be possible if i removed the fuel line that goes to the carb and poured fresh gasoline down to the pump so that , that would be the first thing to hit to the carb and start right up ? ,, or would it be better to just put new fuel in the tank over the bad fuel and mix with a little stp additives and jus see how it flow..

I suppose that you could try to siphon it out. And I know alot of people will disagree here, but I'd just squirt some WD40 in the spark plug holes and put some additive in the tank like Seafoam or Berryman's and just try to fire it up.
Oh, and post some pics!

Well, you could take the feed line off of the tank side of the pump and attach another line to the pump and run it to a gas can full of gas, and thus have a supply of fresh fuel to the carb to run it for a bit. Depending on the level in your tank, a full tank of fresh fuel and some additive might suffice without having to drop the tank and empty it, but at any rate, I'd prepare to change fuel filters a couple of times after you get it up and running.

Sayin it back fires and a spark flys in that sht,, thats a mess in a half,,, Thats why am asking if i could pour enough fuel down the line ,, where the mechanical fuel pump would have,, then right when i start it,, it would rush right up there to the carb and use it

you MIGHT be able to do that, but it is better to unhook the line from the tank so you don't pull any of the old gas in and just pour some down the carb and crank it like that. I think it will be to hard to get the line filled up like you are wanting.

Cool car! That's an HO aircleaner. If that's an L69/5 speed, you've got a fairly rare IROC.

You can get / borrow a electric fuel pump and connect to the the gasline going to your fuel pump and just suck out all the old gas.

Re: Jus bought an iroc ,, quick question on starting it
like said above, you could disconnect your feed line from your tank and run another line to a gas tank. Once you get the car to the firing position where it runs you could always hook the lines back up to your gas tank. remove the fuel line to your car and run that line into another empty gas tank and hit the starter.... your fuel pump will pump fuel out of your gas tank into the gas can
still better to take your gas tank off but this should work.

Iight Ama see whats up on what i do,, but let me ask yall sumtin
I red from other post that people put oil in the spark plug holes,,
I never did that but was able to crank the engine by hand with the spark plugs in
(what does that tell me) (The engine aint seized?) ,, (Block isnt froze?),, pistons arent
Rusted and rings dont stick?

yep.. if you can roll the block over then it is not seized. That however does not mean that there arent other issues like rust spots and or rings are good. your assembly might be rolling but doesnt mean its all good to go. You wont really know that untill you try to start it and see if you have oil leaks. If your exhaust is blue then you more than likely have a leak, but also a point of interest is if the car is smoking a little when its cold, give it a few mins to warm up and the smoke might go away as stuff expands when its warm.

So how did that work for you. I am buying a 1988 Formula 5.7 TPi that has sat for 6 yrs. Not sure about trying to start it before buying. This car is a survivor that only has 50,000 miles and never seen a winter on the road. Looks new!!
