Car overheated

Ok so my car over heated on the 60 cause six lanes of traffic was getting directed into one off ramp. My car was sitting for like 45 mins which I hate for this damn reason and ended up it happins, first time this car as over heated too. So the car started over heating before I could get to the side of the road so when i finally did steam was already coming out of the hood. So i did all the things to help cool it down and water etc. and it worked fine after that, worked later that night, worked the next day, and the day after that. But. the moment it sat for one day. Engine siezed up and I had to crank it free to get it to start running, and it was rough at first then went back to normal. Strange burning smell then that stopped. and now my car sounds quieter. So I don't know what the hell happined to randomly make my car seize. and i wanna think ya you know had time to settle and cool off but.. it was able to do that the first two days but it showed no signs of hesitation. 228 thousand miles... Old worn out girl. Just need her to last a little bit long till i get her rebuilt.
Any info on what could have happined?
