Is a K&N worth it?

Just wondering if a basic K&N E-1450 was worth it? Horsepower gain? I used to put these things in everything I owned but do they really make much of a difference? I got a brand new one and a new cleaner/oil kit from my buddy for the cost of me buying him drinks...which I end up doing anyway! I know every pony gained in my 305 TBI counts but will it do much?

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

worth ? for performance next to nothing if any . worth , (cost effective) yes if your going to keep the car for a length of time . some people say a waste of money , others no . i have one in my car , i've owned it 3-4 yrs. . (it's my 5th 3rd gen counting 2 parts cars) my truck is a different story , i've gone through a couple of K&N filters in it . my truck is a 1989 dodge TBI V-8 that i bought new . worth it on my truck , hell yes . oh well your choice . good luck .

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

I have a 14 inch round air cleaner setup in my car, and I was wondering if the K&N filter and filter lid I had on there was actually doing any good. So I decided to do some testing and actually measure it. I did some data logging at WOT using the K&N setup and another using a cheap paper filter and solid filter lid. In both tests I am losing about 5 kPa of MAP at WOT.

Forget it. Paper filters are the way to go.

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

I have a K&N in everything, but my new car, it will get one when the stock filter gets dirty. I just put one in my TA as the fitler was very dirty, but I cannot say it helps as i did a full tune up at the same time. I have always had good luck with them.

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

When I was in high school I could have sworn the K&N made my weedwhacker whack my parent's weeds BETTER! Psychological effect of the KnN box looking all raced out! Well, I stuck it in the Bird last night and the car DID feel a little peppier this morning...but that could all attribute to me washing it

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

The K&N debate has always made me laugh. Try this, take out your air filter and take the car for a spin, notice any difference? If it feels the same then it's clear the fancy filter is mostly a gimmick. When I was first getting into cars I bought a K&N and didn't realize it needed to be cleaned and recharged every so often, the end result was a lot of dust was found on the clean side of the filter and so probably in the engine as well. Stick with stock, it's cheaper, cleaner and easier. Just my 2 cents though

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

I have used a K&N in my camaro for over 10 years now, have had to replace it once, now I have a few of the dryflow filters on hand by AEM. These things are a great alternative and the price is really good. Fully washable and no need to oil. http://www.ebay.com/itm/370475389255...84.m1423.l2649

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

Tested this on a bolt on L98 and LS1 car....sorta. L98 car I did K&N filters vs no air filter and didnt see any gain or loss at the track. So its not a restriction on the camaro TPI type box. Also did same intake on my 383 vs no filter and then 3.5" custom CAI with AEM dryflow filter and saw no gains/differences that i could measure.

I did a paper filter vs no filter on the LS1 car I have... I did see a tiny gain in track performance/et with no filter vs paper cheapies from autozone. I did a filter, no filter, filter, no filter runs at the track and recorded air conditions to account for changes.

Somewhere around 0.05-06 ET and I think less than 0.15 mph.... back to back hotlap runs so the paper filter was holding it back some. although its impossible to feel actually feel it. I plan to upgrade it to a slightly better flowing filter combined with homemade ram air to see some gains.

It may not be worth the cost, and doesnt show much ET/mph but every little bit helps if the intake side is restricted. If its not, then it probably wont matter.

yeah, i miss the nicer weather we had this year but its probably too hot now haha. I'll take mild summers thanks. Too bad I didnt get out to the meets as much as I would have liked. I'd love to take a trip down with my car and hit up those tracks but not sure if i'll get around to that. Its a far trip

Re: Is a K&N worth it?

I can only comment about the one I put on my 2000 c2500 truck. I took a trip to Virginia with it and averaged just over 15 mpg. I had to go again two weeks later but I put a K & N on it. With approx. the same load I averaged 18 mpg. No Noticable power difference though.
After I did not clean it as I should have I have never gotten that same 18 mpg on highway again with it as clean as it would get but am still about 16mpg.
