HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
Hi, I am thinking of Changing the Carb and the Dist out of my car for a Non Comp controlled version, Is this a good idea? What else do I need to do? Any recommendations on what Dist to use?

very easy to do-especially since your car is a stick-no
converter clutch circuit to deal with.Stock non-CCC
distributor and carb can be found on pre-81 cars and
many light trucks up though about '86.If you use stuff
close to thirdgen era, should be basicly "R+R"job.
When i had my crossfire off for modification,i just
clapped on a Q-jet and vacume dizzy taken from an'84
chevy 3/4 ton pickup-actually ran good as is,but was
only getting about 12-15MPG...Carb had the usuall
seeping well plugs and i didn't modify the distributor
advance,so probably could have improved those if
i was going to keep the non-CCC stuff in place for
longer.

I have a 670 Holley Street avenger on the shelf, is that a decent carb? A recommendations for a Dist? I was thinking a MSD, I already have a 6 AL box. I just want a plug and play set up.

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
I converted to a non-cc ignition with the MSD Street Fire from Jegs (http://www.jegs.com/i/MSD+Ignition/121/8362/10002/-1). To this I added the Accel "corrected" cap (http://www.jegs.com/i/Accel/110/8141R/10002/-1) and a set of cut to length MSD Street Fire plug wires.
Very happy with the results. I should have done this as soon as I removed my emissions controls, but it took me a while to figure out I needed to get rid of the cc.
I also have a Holley 670 cfm Street Avenger on an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake and Hedman shorty headers. My otherwise stock 305 runs great now with this combination; night and day from where I started with the stock Quad-jet set-up.

What kind of trans are you running?
And why did you have to replace the cap?

I have a T5, 5-speed. I use the corrected cap so the wires are better organized and don't have to cross over each other. It's just my preferrence; you can see how clean they are below.

Do you have any kind of bog problems with the Vac Secondary carb? I guess Mech Secondary's are preferred with Manuals.

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
Here is the Jegs item for the cap: http://www.jegs.com/i/Accel/110/8141R/10002/-1. The correct wiring order is internally routed in the cap so that the external connections are in physical order 1-3-5-7 and 2-4-6-8. The corrected cap is no taller than a standard cap as well.
I don't have any bogging with the vacuum secondaries, but I have an internally stock 305. Different cam, heads, etc would probably make a difference with that.

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
Well it's not daily driven, it's mostly summer driven by my son, but my sense is that the gas mileage must have improved at least 10%, maybe more.
Replacing the CC HEI with the vacuum advance HEI greatly improved the driveability and low end acceleration from a stop. I also swapped a horribly operating 700R4 (couldn't ever adjust it to get the right shift points) with a manual T5 about the same time, so it's hard to isolate one improvement from another.

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
Mine runs well, I have been having a Problem with it afterfiring/Backfiring when even I am deceling, Never while shifting or reving or anything else. I have tried a lot of stuff. The only thing that has stop it is when I unplug the four wires at the dist but i guess that doesn't allow the Dist to Adjust timing.

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
I'm not sure you will completely get rid of that. Mine "rumbles" and "pops" a bit when I get off the gas. It's not a loud backfire, but it is noticible. I've just assumed that cam timing or something valve relarted creates that. I just replaced the timing chain (which was really loose), but that didn't effect the rumble.
It's curious that unplugging the computer from your distributer changes that for you. My understanding is that if the computer is not connected, it defaults to retard the timing with no advance curve, which keeps it barely drivable to limp home.

I tested it a couple times unplugged, Not one single pop. the car def is down on power then, I wish there was a way to set up a switch that cut the power to that plug when I let off the gas.

I would also like to know the reason for the rumble and pop when I get off the gas. I think I might start a new thread to find out . . .

Re: HEI Advice needed, Going Non Comp controled
Oh boy I have been down this road for many years on here and other boards, Search my Name and you will see them going back many years.early 2000's.
I have tried different carbs, Proms exhaust, cat's hollowed cat's no Cat's. No change the only thing that did it was unplugging that wire.
My 305 never did this and My Summit built 350 Never did this either Just this motor. Drives me nuts.
