Re: Engine Removal

I removed the trans first, then the engine. I hope there isn't a next time, but if there is, I'm pulling them together.

It's fairly straight forward job, just lots of wires and hoses. Be gentle with all the plastic connectors, they break easy because they've lost thier bendability over time. After you have the harness loose, you can tuck the whole thing under the wipers. Tie the A/C compressor out of the way.

Remove your hood and take your time. Seperating them I don't recommend. Pull them together..

Re: Engine Removal

Do not forget the starter wires and reverse and speedo on the trans. Unbolt the shifter and rags in the shifter hole on trans. Unbolt the torque arm and take the drive shaft out. Trans mount and crossmember.

Re: Engine Removal

Some people like to pull them both together, some like to do them separately. Whichever one is easier depends on your inclination and facilities.

Re: Engine Removal

If you have a friend or two who is willing to help, pull them together if you prefer. It is defiantly faster.

I almost always separate them before I pull either/both out. I've smashed the radiator support before trying to pull them both out at the same time by myself. If you pull them separate and install them separately, I suggest pulling a motor mount off the block when you mate the bellhousing; otherwise you are in for one hell of a time.

Re: Engine Removal

I litterally just put my engine and trans back in last weekend. I pulled them separate. The whole process is straight foreward but the transmission is a pita. I have an engine hoist but the front of the car is so long that the engine hoist had to be lowered in increments so that the bottom of the engine would clear the top of the cowl and the top of the engine hoist boom would not smash into my garage door. It would have been easier to come at it from the side in my case but i still went in/out straight on. Unless you have a ton of room (above you and maybe with the front clip off) , i dont see pulling the engine and trans together.
Just remember, when you pull the transmission out (if you do it separate) you have to use a little muscle going in and out. The splines tend to get hung up or something on the input shaft so just be firm and steady going in and out of the back of the engine with the input shaft.

Another advise point would be to make sure your pulling your engine out level, when i pulled my engine out of the car it actually hung from the hoist on a slant which made it difficult going back into the car (i ended up lowering the passenger side of the car to match the slant of the engine.)

All in all most of the stuff you just have to dive into and see what works best. Feel free to post back up and ask questions. Good luck.
PS. you can put the engine back in with SHORTY headers bolted up already. Kind of a tight fit but shell go.

Re: Engine Removal

and I had to remove the drivers side header when putting my engine back in. It got caught but with the engine already on the hoist putting the header back on was a cake walk

I yank and reinstall with them together. No fuss no muss

Re: Engine Removal

I have always pulled both together. Unfortunately I have always had reason to have both out. I have done it alone but definately prefer help (mostly for the extra eyes).
As stated above it depends on what you can do based on experience, patience, and tools, and work area.
When I do mine I will be pulling both together and putting back in together but on another car I have I will block the tranny and only pull the engine as I have about 6 - 8 inches of room between the motor and the firewall and hopefully no need to pull the tranny.

Really? I was able to leave the headers in the engine bay of a 4th gen LT1 car and drop the motor back in.

Usually I leave the headers in the engine bay attached to the y pipe or I just take them off. Never have I tried to install the motor with them attached.

Re: Engine Removal

Suprised it wasn't brought up, but if you pull both together or seperate, you should pull the distributor, because in both instances you need to lower the tranny to either get it out too or get the bell housing bolts. I just got done swapping my motor but tranny was good, and instaed of fussing with.lossening lines and draining tranny fluid, I left the tranny in the car and just pulled the motor, there is no wrong or right way, as long as you don't break something that you can't easily replace or fix.

Re: Engine Removal

You don't have to lower the trans to split the bell housing. I have never taken the trans mount off or pulled the distributor.

Thanks for the help. It looked like an easy pull, but we all know how that goes. LOL
