Distributor Question about advancing timing...
So in rebuilding my engine it appears that I tosed my old dizzy...
I was rummaging through the 120 options I have and at this point am wondering what route to go.
The EBL controls the advancement of timing, so is there any reason to get a vacuum or mechanically advanced distributor? Isn't that counter productive. The only reason I ask is every HEI distributor that I come across has been vacuum advanced, do I just not connect a vacuum source if I still want the EBL to control it?
Wanted to go HEI to clean up the engine bay as much as possible, but it just seems easier to go stock.
Thanks for the help in advance...

The car wouldn't run with a mechanical distributor.

Plus it's not totally true, either. But let's keep it simple. Lazy me just opened my Summit catalog, and I don't see 120 options that'll work with your stock computer. In fact, without bothering to go to the various websites, all I see is MSD's 8366. And I wouldn't pay $280 for that, either.

Re: Distributor Question about advancing timing...
You need a computer controlled HEI with the wiring connection for SA control from the ECM
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DUI-12611BK/
otherwise used CC HEI dist from a L98 Vette (TPI ) or early '80's F-Body HEI
Cheaper alt is the small cap /remote coil setup as used on later F-Bodies and 87 -95 TBI trucks

Re: Distributor Question about advancing timing...
Got it, so I have 3 choices:
1. Use a stock dizzy. Keep EBL
2. Use the DUI dizzy. Keep EBL
3. Choose vac or mech advance and go carbed...
Thanks...

Re: Distributor Question about advancing timing...
The mentioned MSD 8366 distributor will also work. Me, I'd find a distributor in decent shape in the JY and clean it up and use it. Most importantly, is to use a GM ICM.
If you use the small cap distributor one of the "Made in USA" house brand (jegs/summit) oil filled canister coils is a good choice.

@ Atilla, 120 was a bit of an exaggeration yes, but I was on google searching not just doing a website crawl.
@ RBob, got it and thanks.
