ok, so i did a head swap on my 89 rs camaro 305 TBI automatic. heads i used are 85,86? iroc camaro heads the heads many recomended 14014416 casting number for 80-85 camaros.

since i did the head swap i have changed the ENTIRE top end gaskets and cleaned up the block base so im almost positive its not a vacume leak and also its all torqued down to spec... i can get the car to turn over and have even had it start then shut off, sometimes the car will backfire as well

im sure im missing details but feel free to ask any other questions i would appreciate any help given thank you.

 

Timing might be 180 out, if it barely starts then dies, could be your issue!
If you have fuel, and spark, its all in the timing!

 

when i put the heads on i put the 1 and 2 wires backwards. and also i gapped the plugs ac cording to the head not the computer in my car. i had them at .045 instead of .035 would that affect it?

 

If it won't start unless the timing is way advanced, and it back fires when it does. Your distributor is 180 degrees off.

 

ok, any suggestions on how to get it set back to the right timing? or best and easiest way to do it

 

unplug your dizzy from any power wires, take off the cap, take off the dizzy hold down clamp, wiggle it loose. from where the point is underneath the cap, rotate it 180* wiggle it in and reverse this order.

 

Also if your valves are over tightened it wont start.

 

are the valves very tempormental? as in they have very little leway for error? is it best to get someone who has done it before to do do it. i have had trouble with it before

 

It's most likely an issue with your base timing or improperly set valve lash, or mixed up wires even.. How did you go about adjusting your valves? Please tell exact procedure.. Also when describe the procedure you followed when installing the dist...
