Compatibility questions
So when I get home from this deployment I have a 86 Z28 with the 5.0 TPI waiting for me to tear it down and build it up. But this is kind of my first rodeo with going this in depth so I wanted to give you guys the list of parts I want to put on it and see if it all works. I am actually forming this off a 350 HP build I seen online but the motors are different so I do not know.
Parts:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-417-8/ Camshaft
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-17001-16/ Roller Rockers
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFS-30300002/ Heads
I have a set of headers waiting and I would also like to replace my timing chain and gears but I don't know what type to get with that cam or if that cam will even go in my block. Help? Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Compatibility questions
Everything except the pistons will interchange from a 305 to a 350 just so they both are early or later models. That being the newer models have a 1 piece rear main seal and the later ones have a two piece. If you are building up the 305 I would check the cam, it will fit but if the specs were off a 350 build sheet it might not be the right one IMO.
Re: Compatibility questions
The build was a 305 but a different type, I am not sure how much difference it makes but the one they used was an LG4 where as mine is an L69 I believe.
EDIT: I see where you got the 350 engine thing from that is actually meant as a 305 motor build that put out 350 horses. Sorry should have been more specific.

Re: Compatibility questions
All right then good luck with your project just take your time and ask questions.c How many miles on the motor to be rebuilt.
Re: Compatibility questions
Odometer says around 90k but hell those things roll over at 100 thousand so I dont know, I plan on having the motor out and then taken to my buddies machine shop to get cleaned, honed, and inspected.

Re: Compatibility questions
Yes the machine shop will take care of most of the things to make it a successful rebuild.
Re: Compatibility questions
So this cam that I want is a hydraulic roller and I keep seeing that it is not compatible with my year motor (1986 305 TPI) if this is true let me know and someone please explain to me exactly what I should do about it, scrap the cam and get a different type or is there someway for me to put it in with more modification?

Re: Compatibility questions
That camshaft that you are looking at is for a boat. I think we can find something that would work better for you.
Re: Compatibility questions
Yeah lol I know it is marine but like I said, I was trying to follow a build, I am COMPLETELY open to suggestion on cams though, got any ideas of what might work out well?

Re: Compatibility questions
The only thing that pops out at a glance is that you are going to have to pick up some new valve covers, as your current ones are center bolt and the new heads are perimeter bolts. Your '86 should already be a roller cam block, assuming it is the factory engine, so no need for any roller conversion kits.
Re: Compatibility questions
So I got in touch with GM and found out the roller cams weren't put in until 87, so now that leaves me with a couple of questions. One, is this a suitable replacement cam and two, I have heard of conflict between the TPI and perimeter bolt heads something about they dont fit right, you guys know anything about this?

Re: Compatibility questions
I have a 350 pre-roller block with vortec center bolt heads and TPI Intake in my '88, not sure what you mean by "not fit right."

Re: Compatibility questions
If you've talking about the intake bolts, they won't match a head with the 4 angled center bolts along the perimeter because TPI '87 and I believe newer intakes have vertical bolts.
The TPI intake bolt holes can be slotted to fit, but you'll need angled washers, or adapters to keep the bolt straight. You may find someone who makes the adapters, which is what I would use. Last resort would be to get an aluminum rod of the bolt washer diameter, bore through for bolt diameter and cut at an 18° angle to make your own, 6" rod should be enough to make 4.

Re: Compatibility questions
So looking at this pic I guess I do have those style heads.

EDIT~ So I cal TFS and they gave me a part number to the exact heads I needed http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFS-30300006/ which just so happen to be centerbolt valve cover SHABAM
