Car computer

I have a 1991 z28 with the 350 tpi engine. The car have been off the road for several years. The car won't start and the computer have been replaced. The mechanic thinks the wrong computer is in the car. He believe there is 3 for that year Camaro. He tells me without knowing the exact numbers off the original the car will never run again. Is there a way to get a replacement computer without having the original still? I need someone to save my car for me. Please help

Only one computer version for all 90 -92 TPI engines ( same computer for both 305 and 350 engines)
GM # 1227730

That identical computer was used in many different cars ,See link below

You buy another computer and put the chip out of yours into it
Only the chip inside the computer ( which may be your actual problem) determines what the computer is for.

Maybe your mechanic is confused and talking about the chip (thing that holds the tune for your setup )
seeing that the computers are all the same

What is" won't start"?
Will not crank over , will not fire up , will not stay running?

Re: Car computer

The engine will turn over and run for about 3 minutes and quit. Fuel pump changed, timing set, a lot of things have been replace trying to figure it out. I will get more info from the shop and post it ASAP. I really want my car back. I think they're trying to rake me over the coals. More and more money and the car still don't run.

Re: Car computer

What if the chip been changed? Would I be able to buy another chip original or aftermarket? And would that make the car run?

You need a shop to work out what is actually wrong rather than guessing what the problem is.You could be broke before they work it out
Have they pulled the engine codes from the computer to see if anything showing?

Get them to take off all the new parts that didn't fix the problem

Yes you can but you need to find out what chip you have first
It will have a 4 letter code stamped on it

Re: Car computer

Is the 4 digit code off the chip the same on all of them? What if someone put the wrong chip in at some point? How would I make sure I get the right chip. I will have the shop check the codes and remove whatever parts that didn't do the job.

No
That is why you need the code to see what you have NOW ; could have a 305 chip it
We can tell you chip what you need AFTER we know what you have now ( and any other problems)

Re: Car computer

it should read anjf or aujp if it is for a 90-92 tpi sd 350 with a 700r4.

Re: Car computer

If it starts and runs ok for 3 minutes, wouldn't that indicate the ecm is probably ok?

Re: Car computer

yes - a dead computer simply won't do anything.((ask me how i know!) The car won't even attempt to start. Runs for 3 minutes and quits could be a whole bunch of things. Is the check engine light on? Start pulling codes, and yes, find a shop that knows what they are doing.
