Gas tank vapors

Hey guys,
I took my '92 for the bi-annual puff test(smog check) a couple of days ago and something happened during the evap test that has got me curious. Being so concerned of the car passing the puff test I forgot to ask the tech about the gas vapor issue. You see the car just barely passed the test last time with a leaky head gasket. And when I say barely I mean less than 2% on both Nox and CO maximums.

Anyway this time it has rebuilt heads on a tired short block and no changes to the emmission system and only about 2K miles in between tests. Prior to test I let the engine get to at least normal operating temps(220) and then I let it idle for about 10-15 mins while my turn came up to get tested. Temps had been fluctuating between 220-235 degree during this time.

So the curiosity arises from when the tech went to check the evap system he popped the gas cap and replaced it with another that hooked up to some machine. Except when he put his cap on, the gas vapors were coming out his caps hose port so hot that he had to stand back to let it cool off. With the engine running the hot vapors kept blowing out so he eventually turned off the engine and tested the tank. With a leaky filler next I though I was for sure going to fail the gas tank test but lo and behold it passed again.......within 2% of NOx and CO maximums.

Should I be concerned with the hot and pressurized gas vapors or is that normal. How hot you ask??....enough to make the tech stand back with enough pressure to blow up a rubber balloon in about 20 seconds or less.

thx

Re: Gas tank vapors

This is an old post but thanks for digging it up and commenting. Hot tank? good idea. I think the muffler is a flomaster 80 series and not sure if there's a heat shield in between.
The cars garaged now getting ready for an overhaul so i'll look out for a shield or have it reinstalled with more space in between tank and muffler.

thanks,

Re: Gas tank vapors

punkmaster I had mine replace too a couple years ago, they probably bent the filler neck taking it out as its a tight fit and messes up the saulder joints. Probably may need a new tank now, I need one as mine wont pass the evap test now for the smg test. Pain in the ***. Best bet is to smnoke test it first tho at a shop to be sure were the vapors are coming out at.
