Usually, hooking the wire back up.

Alternatively, fixing the broken wire.

In EXTREMELY rare cases, replacing the sending unit.

Occasionally, a faulty gauge; but that's probably the last resort.

It's an inherent problem with OPGs in general that use the discipline of most electric OPGs; which is, low pressure = short to ground (which conveniently enough would also light an idiot light), and high pressure = open (which would extinguish such a light, if there were any idiots paying any attention to it)

old thread but whats normal oil psi? around 60, around 30, between the two? that little white line? mines usually at the bottom of the little white line between 30 and 60, but lately its been going all the way up to 60 as soon as i start the car, is that okay?

Yup; pressure is higher when the oil is cold & thick. Fluctuates w RPM also.

"Normal" for these motors is around 25 - 30 @ idle and 50 - 55 @ cruise (2500 RPM or higher), hot.

The factory "gauge" (really, a trim package) is notoriously inaccurate. Its absolute numerical indication cannot be relied upon. Watch instead for it to be doing what it "always" does, versus sudden abnormal or deviant things.

Someone will no doubt pipe up with the "10 psi per thousand RPM" thing. That is ABSOLUTELY NOT "NORMAL" at all; it's merely the "racer's rule of thumb" for the minimum required psi at higher RPM FOR SURVIVAL. ABSOLUTELY NO STOCK MOTOR WHATSOEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE AUTOMOBILE has had pressure like that as its "normal" behavior.

thanks sofa, yeah my tachs total ****, i (according to it) run about 6-7k on the interstate, so i cant imagine the oil psi gauge is accurate it is usually within 30-60, never over or under, so if that drastically changes i'll have cause for alarm, i know it burns oil and its probably a 1/3 of a quart low at its worst but that isn't enough to hurt it until i can get something else to drive while i rebuild my 305
