1983 Z-28 Leaks

Hey guys and gals. I have just started on my 83 Z28 and have been fixing things as I see them. The list is long and I have started on the engine bay. The power stearing is leaking where the stearing shaft goes into the cast stearing gear housing. Looks like a pain in the butt to try to fix....am I looking at a rebuild or a replace thing here. I have plenty of ability, can the seals be replaced on the housing or is it just easier to replace? I'm just getting started with this car and don't know much about avaiblity of parts. Thanks for your help. Matt

Re: 1983 Z-28 Leaks

It's not the pump itself that is leaking. The pump has a hose that comes out of it, and goes to the gear box. I think I'm calling it by the correct name. The stearing wheel shaft goes into it. Where the shaft goes in, it has a u joint connection and then into the cast case. It's leaking where the shaft goes into the case. I would assume that it's easier to pull the gear box out and work on it over a bench. Let me know if I'm out of line here or not. Thanks for your quick response. Matt

Yup, piece o cake to work on it on the bench. I've done several, no problems except for being careless and letting the ***** fall out and go everywhere and losing them, when I tear em down.

Go for it, you'll be glad you did.
