Tranny leaking into my speedo cable

Hey guys and gals. I have an 83 Z-28 that I have been working on to get road ready. I have been slowly replacing seals and tackled the tranny oil seal on the drive shaft, the pinion seal, and fixed the speedo.... It seems that the car enjoyed sitting in the barn rather than running the road. I fix one issue and created 2 more. I fixed the dripping transmission from the drive shaft to massive bleeding out of the new cable I installed in the side of the transmission that goes to the cruise control. I have tried cranking it down to the point of thinking that I might break something, putting some RTV blue sealer on the threads, praying, and calling my car some things that I can't post here. Could the cable be too long and need trimming so it isn't pushing in on that plastic piece that is in the tranny? That fitting that goes into the tranny has a keeper bolted to the housing, do I need to pull that piece and reseal it? The fluid seems to be comming through the cable where the cable goes into the threaded collar. There isn't any seal in the cable, just on that orange plastic piece with the square hole in it that accepts the cables interior. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Hope someone else has had this issue. Thanks Matt

There are 2 o rings in the speedo adaptor piece, probably need to replace them.

Don't tighten the cable too much,I did and ended up needing the adaptor as well as the o-rings,I snapped it clean off.

Yes,it has an o-ring on the outside and a little o-ring on the inside,I couldn't find one at any parts stores or dealers so I stopped in at a transmission shop,he got me one in a day or 2 for around $20 bucks.

The driven gear is inserted in a sleeve, which has O-rings. The cable fits in one side of the gear, the gear meshes with the drive gear on the other side.

You may find the sleeve at the following website:

Also, note that you might have more responses in the Transmission and Drivetrain forum.

Best of luck with your project.

Re: Tranny leaking into my speedo cable

I got a new "bullet" with the gear in it and it's still leaking. What a bummer. I also put in a new cruise control module becasue it was hard to turn the cable. This was recomended by the mechanic. I did this and the cruise doesn't work. More reasearch for me. Any ideas would be appreciated. Other than selling the car. Thanks. Matt
