Anyone on here with this combo? Input Appreciated.
hey guys the cars a 91 GTA 5.7
dropping in a LT1cam, new springs, 1.6 pro mag comp cam rockers, lifters, gaskets etc.. and while a Friend and I were trying to get the intake mani bolt out that was stripped to heck my buddy in his infinite wisdom broke the corner of the intake manifold off. So i figured might as well get a new one. Im looking at the sdpc intake manifold. yes ive read that many people say its restricting( i do plan to port it) my buddy picked up a set of vortec heads from lkq today for $109 bucks. figured for that price I might as well grab me a set and drop my rockers and spring on those bad boys and give it a whirl. I currently have the car pulled apart and im porting my stock runners a bit for now until i can get a set of slp's to siamese. (probably in the next month so they might not even see the new setup)
Id like to speak with anyone that has a similar set up or can provide some further info as to what I should expect and things to pay attention to. things you wish you would have done. or anything you think I should do. ie.. *whether you think i should go with a different intake such as the edelbrock vortec base or anything I have overlooked.
any information would be appreciated. im trying to see 13's possibly 12's in the future. do you think with the setup as stated thats obtainable or will it need further mods?
Thanks in advance Trae

I had a friend run vortecs and a LT1 cam in a carbed setup in his 83 shortbed fullsize pick up. Not the lightest vehicle but it ran mid 13's at 99-100 mph. I thought that was pretty good for a brick and stock head/cam....
Only thing to watch for is the LT1 cam's lift on stock heads...with 1.6's they get up near .480-.490 lift which is generally considered to much for vortecs with OEM type springs. Retainers may hit guide boss. So I'd use LS6 latemodel yellow beehives or comp's 918's which are much more pricey but they give extra clearance, something like .510-.520" lift or so? Need to double check
OR run Alex's parts vortec spring kit which gives more lift. Guy on here just went into the 11's with a big cammed stock vortec head combo in a carbed motor, so the spring kit worked
So with runners/base and those heads with good tuning, and proper suspension/torque converter stall speed if automatic trans, and 3.23-3.42 gears, it will go high 12's in good air no problem. I've been 12's with stock L98 heads/cam with 1.6 rockers but HSR intake. AFtermarket TPI and vortec heads with LT1 cam would give abit more performance over what i had

Those would work but you'd have to check to see if the retainers hit the valve guide boss at over .470s lift. I'd just take the vortec heads to a machine shop and tell them to cut the bosses down to allow .525" lift or so and you should be ok. Maybe even .550 to allow for maximum clearance. Its not much money and those heads likely will need hot tanked/cleaned and surface milled a tiny bit to clean them up before going on motor. New seals/check the valves/guides too...etc

If memory serves, those are just some kind of garden-variety retainers, that have had the "ghetto grind" pre-applied to them by Alex.
