back to life

Hi Everyone, it's been several years since I have been here on this site. The short version...Ok, so about 5 years ago or so, I was driving my 92 RS home from work and the drivers side seat had worn through to the metal and it would poke holes in my pants right in the legs / butt area. So I got kind of pissed off and parked it, threw a tarp over it and let her sit.

I had just replaced the suspension, new moog iroc springs and shocks all the way around. I was a computer/ network tech at the time and my work pants were formal and pricey so I figured I'd just park it until I could either repair or replace the seat. So I just drove my pickup truck instead of the camaro. But then, later that year I was in a serious accident and required serious spinal surgery which in the end, ended up to be a complete and utter failure. It required me to have intensive therapy just to be able to walk and move again...
All this time my beloved Camaro sat dormant under the tarps in my driveway. I had installed a new L05 with new 700r4 raptor tranny (which I loved), and she was running like a beast and mega stable/reliable, with maybe 35K miles on the new motor/tranny setup when I parked it.

The fuel tank was almost empty when I parked it...Now it wont start and there is not even a hum from the fuel pump, its silent. It use to hum for a second or so when I turned the key, nothing now, and the fuel gauge is now stuck on half a tank...Is there a sending unit in the tank that I should replace? My goal here is to put the camaro back on the road this fall. I gather that Ill need to replace the fuel pump and I figure that while im there (inside the tank) I would also replace the screen, is there anything else in the tank that controls the fuel gauge?

I have owned this car since 1992 and this will be the second fuel pump I have had to put in, in all that time...Its been many years since then and I dont really remember the in tank setup, and this is why I bring it all up...Also, catback rotted out Any suggestions for one on the cheap? I just wanna get her back on the road and then make more permanent changes like adding headers and better exhaust, and new seat..Im disabled now and all I have is time...
Thank you for any and all feedback

Sorry to hear about your tough row. Can't be a lot of fun.

Most likely the little bit of gas left in the tank degraded, broke down, and left varnish and parts-eating residues in the tank and pickup unit. I would assume at the very least a tank removal and thorough cleaning is in order. The fuel level sending unit may just need to be cleaned, but it is also possible it has been damaged. Your best bet may be to get a replacement tank and pickup from a junkyard (with a guarantee of being good, although they may not guarantee the pump - I wouldn't). Put a new fuel pump in while you're at it either way. The pickup sock should always be replaced whenever the tank is dropped. As should the fuel filter in the line.

After that is back up to where it should be, you may still have issues with your TBI, both the injectors and regulator. For sure after getting the tank/fuel pump up to snuff, disconnect the line and pump fresh fuel through the line before you try to start it. A detergent gas additive may increase the chances of it working without further issues, but I wouldn't count on it.

Catback - depends upon what you're after and ultimate goals. '86-'90 TPI single cat exhaust from headers to cat to catback is usually the best bet from a performance standpoint (don't bother with stuff made for the LO3). I really like my Flowmaster Force II - some people don't like the single tailpipe, but I prefer that to something that looks "better" but doesn't perform as well. It isn't especially loud, but I like that, too. (Summit isn't showing it available anymore, the one I have may have been discontinued.) If you go that route before doing the headers/cat, make sure the cat is modified to fit the catback, and not the other way around. The best approach would be to replace the entire exhaust system at the same time.

Re: back to life

Do you really think I should replace the entire tank? I only ask because, well, how would I know that a (junk) yard tank would be any better? with regards to having old fuel/ old fuel damage in it? Allow me to clairify, and Im not in any way shape or form trying to argue with you, but just trying to increase my understanding here. Would it be really difficult to clean that crap out of my existing tank? Or do you think I should spare myself the grief and just start hunting a newer tank?
I appreciate your patience with me and thanks again man.
