did a TPI to carb swap put in my 383 wouldt start then realized the TPI distibuter wouldt work so i took the one outta a 74 camaro and droped in there and all it did was back fire out the carb once never ran or anything it is a brand new motor and we have no clue what to do it has spark and gas just need some input on what could be wrong

 

timing. i would reset the dist and make sure your tdc if its backfireing it sounds like a timing issue

we have tried re setting it multiple times all it does is back fire im starting to think it isnt the right distributer

 

make sure the wires are in the tight order. also have a friend try to start it wile you adjust the dist a little bit either way.

tried adjusting it and it doesnt change anything

 

are the rocker arms set correctly if intake is staying open it could cause a backfire in the carb.

some where loose so we tightened them up alittle also gapped the plugs and it seems to make a hige differance but still didt run it wants to so bad but wont, so we pulled the plugs to check them and the back 2 on each side seem to be getting gas one or two where alittle black and the front ones didt seem like they had much gas at all and i know for sure the car is getting gas no problem... the car is up on ramps in the front but i dont see why that would matter for only the back plugs to get gas
