Heat Mannerisms

Alright guys, I got that 1984 Z28 from Ebay. First thing that I did was to give it a new Cap, Rotor, Coil, Wires, and Spark Plugs. The Ignition System was in DIRE need of attention. Once I installed all of that, I fired it up. The car ran VERY rough. I revved it a few times and it smoothed out after a bit. It's still not JUST right, but it's acceptable. I guess the ECU had to have time to adjust to the new parts.

That brings me to another problem. When the car is Hot (200-220), It hesitates when I depress the accelerator. I have to feather the pedal to keep it from stalling. It's just not snappy. This car has the original computer controlled Q-Jet. Do you think it needs a Rebuild? If that isn't the source of the problem, what are some probable culprits?

The Engine: 305 HO (L69)

I'm runnin' everything stock. It's all under the control of the ECU.

First make sure you have no vacuum leaks, tighten down the carb hold down bolts. Put a vacuum pump on the pull offs that are mounted on the carb to make sure they hold vacuum. Get a can of carb cleaner & blast away. See if that helps.

Re: Heat Mannerisms

I would check timing as well as what has been said already. If timing has already been played around with I would say that a vacuum leak or the quadra-bog is to blame. (I say quadra-bog in a fond way)

Re: Heat Mannerisms

I got the Exhaust replaced today. Figured it ran well enough to take to the shop. I have a lot of things to accomplish on this car before I drive it 500 Miles to Shreveport, LA. When I got it back from the shop, It started to become difficult to keep running at stop lights on the way home. I looked at the Fuel gauge and noticed that I was at about 1/8, so I stopped for Fuel. When I was finished fueling, the car wouldn't start again. I pushed it to a parking spot and let it sit for about 15 Minutes. After that time, I BARELY got it to start again. At this point I realized that I would never make it home, so I went to the nearest parts store. I figured that would be the best place to break down. After some Investigating, the current conjecture is that the fuel pump is bad. It's Mechanical and looking at the clear in line filter, there is barely any fuel there. The Thing should be at least half full. Even with the engine off, it should be half full, but there was barely enough to cover the bottom of the filter. They didn't have it in stock, so I left the car. It should be there early tomorrow morning. I'll replace it in the parking lot. Wish me luck.

Re: Heat Mannerisms

Guys, I'm sorry that I've worked you all to death on this. I'm just stupid. The whole problem is what was suggested by one of the guys at Autozone. He said that it was my MAF sensor. I told him it's got a Carb and he dismissed it as well. When I took the car to get brakes, The mechanic suggested the same thing. I told him it had a Carb and he said "So?". I changed that and it's a TOTALLY different car. I didn't even know it had one. Never even looked for it. The thing runs like a top!

Now the only thing that I need to fix is the Ignition, But that's electrical. I'll post on that soon. Thank you for helping me. I'm learning more every time i work on these things.

I guess. I thought that the abbreviation meant "Mass Air Flow" or MAF. If it was a MAP, I guess it could be "Mass Air Phlow" (I'm just Joking BTW). I'll take all the advice I can get so long as I can learn something from it. I still don't know why a car with a Carburetor would need something like that, but apparently it does.

Re: Heat Mannerisms

Camaros from 81-87 had feed back carbs. They have throttle postion sensors & ecms too. The manifold absolute pressure sensor measures engine vacuum for the ecm , the carb also has a mixture control solenoid.

Re: Heat Mannerisms

Well, I guess I did learn something more. Thank you ex-x-fire. I learned even more than that today too. My carburetor is VERY seriously broken. When will it ever end with this car? I enjoyed exactly ONE DAY of the Camaro running quite well. Makes me wonder how much i'll have to spend to get this car in shape enough to get me back to Shreveport, LA. Currently, I'm in Rolla, MO. I tell ya, I sure can pick the cars..........
