Broken Oil Dipstick

I've got a 1991 Camaro with a 350 swapped in it. I put headers on it a couple weeks ago and of course, the oil dipstick tube bracket was rusted to a manifold bolt. And of course, I broke the tube off...in two spots....

THE FIX!

I tried looking up what other people did to get the tube out on here and other forums. I thought the idea of using a concrete anchor was a good one. It was extremely difficult to even get in the area to hold it down and expand the anchor. Don't try this...waste of time. Best thing was using a 3/8 bolt with a tapered tip. I threaded it in about an inch or so just to be sure and used a long flat screw driver under the head and tapped it right out with a hammer. Remove you starter first. Way more room to work with!

Re: Broken Oil Dipstick

I did use an aftermarket tube for a replacement. I don't know who made it because my neighbor just gave it to me. I assume it was a standard SBC chrome tube. With some tweaking, it went right in no problem. Not a good time to be the Hulk though....

Re: Broken Oil Dipstick

Good call on using a bolt to pull it out. This happened to me two years ago on the 350 Olds in my boat. I tried pulling it out with the same method you used, and it ended up falling off inside the oil pan. It being a boat, and me not being able to pull the pan without disassembling the entire jet drive and pulling the motor out of the boat, I just left it down there.

2 years of tubing and water skiing later and it has never been a problem. I'm sure the end of the tube was heavy enough to go to the bottom of the pan, and that's where it's stayed, haha.
