Blue Smoke on Start Up
Blue Smoke on Start Up
Hi,
I'm new to this forum so I hope you will excuse me if I break any rules.
I have a SBC Chevy 5.7L circa 1980/85 engine block number 14010207 with a 4 bolt mains, it's fitted into my Gardner Douglas 427 Cobra, I recently sent the body off for spraying & while it was away I wanted to fit new valve stem seals due to a bit of blue smoke on start up but other than that it seems to start & run ok, I checked the valve clearance before dismantled anything (checking lash) I found with no 1 on TDC, if I checked some inlet valves I found I could push down on the push rods to the amount where there was approx 4mm gap between the valve top & it's cam rocker, I've not done much work on Chevy V8 but is this OK or I'm I right in thinking it needs to be stripped down, the engine was rebuilt a about 5K ago, it's a basic SBC with normal cam followers & rockers (non roller).
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Kelvin

The mods here are pretty strict about thirdgen F-body stuff only, they'll end up locking your thread within an hour probably because there are no firebirds or camaros in it. its nothing personal I promise.
He's probably right. Check out lateral-g.net too, a lot of really experienced guys over there who focus on pro-touring highly prepped racecars for the street. Or maybe highly prepped street cars for the track/autoX...

Yeah that's OK I would fully expect to get lock out, I have the problem sorted now I wasn't used to hydraulic lifters cams, I was just hoping that a guy from the UK with not much experience of V8 motors that you guys over the other side of the pond would help.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up
I don't want to rub the TGO gods wrong but since your problem is on a small block chevy engine, common to the third gen F- body, I think I can offer you some help. Oil smoke on start up is a common issue with chevy engines with factory style valve seals, especially as the valve guides and stems wear. GM issued a technical service bulletin on this topic in 1987. They revised the exhaust valve stem seals at that time, installing push on seals, to help the issue but these only last so long. The only real solution I know of is to have the valves and guides redone and install push on stem seals.
