82 camaro dies when put in gear.

To start off I had a 305 with carb and a 700r4 tranny, and the car would die every time I put it in gear unless I made it go and just took off. I had the transmission plugged in at this time. I now have a brand new 383 with a carb and it does the same thing with the transmission unplugged/plugged in, what could be causing this?
