New distributor and new carb WONT IDLE!

I got a 305 sbc. had a Rochester carburetor before along with the computer controlled distributor. I switched them both out for a 600cfm Edelbrock 1405 carb and a ebay 65,000 volt HEI dist with msd wires.Car started up good but backfired thru carb so i advanced the dist and then no start so i retarded it and now it starts great but wont idle. i have to keep tappign on the throttle and even if i hold it at 5k RPM itll stumble and die. but i can rev it up and down forever. choke is full open new fuel lines and filter. also i notice white smoke coming out from my carb i dont have PCV hose connected. i have dist vacuum secondary connected and manifold vacuum capped and 1/4 vacuum on back capped due to the power brakes steel line fitting is to big.
Any ideas? I have messed with the mixture screws already with no luck and i can get it to idle at 3k with idle screw but itll die after a few seconds.

weird thing is i can retard timing and itll run better but if i advance it wont start. I can retard anymore due to vacuum thing hitting intake

Re: New distributor and new carb WONT IDLE!

Was the cam and emissions stuff already done prior to this carb and dizzy swap or are those new as well? Did you find TDC correctly when you were putting the new distributor in ?

Before you go any further make absolutely sure there are no vacuum leaks. I cant tell you how many times I've been tweaking this or that, and completely forgot to hook the main vacuum line back up the carb. Runs like crap and wont idle at all.

i will double check for vacuum lieaks tomorrow. and the cam was doen before me when i bought car running. but i dropped rochester and it cracked so i bought some new stuff for it the emissions stuff i did. i got the plate between the egr thing and the manifold and welded it shut and bolt it back on to the manifold. pcv valve has a hose on it but its connected rear brake vacuum is plugged and timed vacuum is to dist and other vacuum is plugged. i have 1 more vacuum on manifold which i plugged to

Re: New distributor and new carb WONT IDLE!

Also i made the EGR block off plate. Could i tbe that it is warped and creating a huge vacuum leak? as it will rev fine but will die ant any steady rpm

Re: New distributor and new carb WONT IDLE!

I got it it was just my choke. I cant adjust my choke because it manual. I closed it and it idles perfect. i just set my intial timing to 10 degress and it revs like a beauty. Now i have 1 more question. How do i hoook up my 700r4 tranny? and can i connect the power brakes vacuum directly to manifold or do i have to use port in back of carb?
