Re: How muich HP can I gain off my LG4??

a cam upgrade suitable to the rest of the combo will make a major horsepower increase as the stock LG4 cam is very mild-I used cam similar to "L69"specs and it worked great with my LG4.

Realistically 300 and maybe 350hp, that's after quite a lot of $$$. Chevys 305 and Fords Coyote 5.0 are two different engines who only have cubic displacement in common, I had an '87 Iroc-Z with the LG4, last year of it too, it was a dog with 170hp & 2.73 gears but if I had kept it I would have mildly built it to where it had at least 260hp & 320lbs torque without burning a hole in my wallet and that's with an auto

I can get you a nice running 82 350 crossfire long block for 250.00 Only problem is it is in southern california.

I tried messing with a LG-4 once, trust me when I say unless you get into cams, heads etc. You still only will see a marginal power increase over a 350 that is stock. Save your money to build a 350 or at least a bored and stroked 305.

Everything about the early 305's were choked up. I know you didn't want to hear the 350 lecture. But it is more cost effective then trying to build a 305.

Maybe a set of 88-91 vette 58cc aluminum heads would help

you have a 84 so you must have a 700 or 5 speed, swap to a 373 rear

maybe a 50-75 shot of nitrous would be your best bet

maybe do free mods like lightening the car to raise the hp to weight ratio

cal i was in your shoes last year with my 86 t/a

IMHO i think you have a badass motor to put into an s10. nothing i did to my lg4 made as big a difference as adding 45 cubes.

but if u cant afford it yet, just drive her exactly the way she is, stack cash and build a motor on the side. when ready, swap.

That engine is awful and makes nowhere near the advertised power rating. Nowhere near.

it is the 350 equivalent of the LG4. Low compression, garbage cam, garbage heads. You can replace everything on it and the crappy cast pistons will still ruin your compression ratio and be crappy cast pistons.

At this point the only thing you can do to make that LG4 faster is cam and heads, but you're severely limited there if your LG4 has dished pistons (I think I read that some of the later ones actually have flat tops? Is that right?) and the compression ratio will make a cam that can make actual power a huge pain in the butt. Just having a 305 limits how big you can go with the cam in a street car in a big way, furthermore, the low compression ratio bottlenecks you even farther.

I would suggest you look into putting a 5.3 or even a 4.8 Gen III truck motor in the car, or if you cant afford to swing that (conversion parts can get pricy, even if you get a running engine for less than $500 that can handle 500hp on factory bottom end parts easy) try an LT1. you can get a good running LT1 pullout for $1000 or so. From there an LT1 is a cam swap away from 350-400hp thanks to their high compression ratios and roller camshafts. It will bolt up to your transmission and your engine mounts and even your headers. You can even get a carb intake for it and run a distributor. When you want over 400 or so hp, streetably, it's time to dump serious money into cylinder heads, or for a Gen III+ swap, so above that level I would leave the LT engines alone. They're an amazing bargain if you stay within the limits of their stock heads.

I hate the idea that people need to "get a 350", because the vast majority of these 350s are smog era garbage, just like that goodwrench 350, and even if your LG4 is probably slower, any factory stock TPI 305 or L69 car could show the goodwrench 350 why it should be ashamed of itself.

To get 300 fwhp out of a 305, streetably, you will need to spend more money on cylinder heads than an LT1 swap will cost, and then you ALSO need a great camshaft, a flat tappet can do it but it's on the tall end of doable, and at your compression ratio I have my doubts. A roller cam can do more with less and can get near there, but that's $2k invested into a low compression 305 when its all said and done. You can get 300 hp and beyond on a 305 streetably, but when you can get an LT1 pullout for half the money and STILL make more power...

The only issue is a pullout is still a pullout. It may spin a bearing the week after you install it. But at least an LT1 is a decent rebuild candidate. Youc an rebuild it and not change a single part (aside from the cam if you havent already) and still be able to respect the power it made. The best Gen I 350 GM ever made was only 255hp, and that's the Vortec 350. It has similar power potential to the LT1, but the LT1 intake is just so much better, and the LT1 is usually going to be cheaper. Even a Vortec 350 needs attention to special areas to make power. An LT1 can do it with a cam swap and new valve springs.

Re: How muich HP can I gain off my LG4??

Id yank off the open air cleaner and find a dual snorkel so your not taking in so much hot underhood air. Just my $0.02. And possibly consider selling the Performer intake because as far as my research has concluded the stock manifold isnt as restrictive as one would think.
