What is this part???

Hey can someone tell me what this part is? It is under the car kinda off center on the passenger side. In the engine compartment I found a rubber hose that is pretty badly cracked, and I followed it under the car to this part, since I had to get under it to change the oil anyways. The car is an 83' z28 305 5.0 carburetor 4 barrel. Mostly stock as far as I know. I want to replace that hose, but I think its probably a fuel line.

Difficult to see. A fuel pump would have three lines.

Yup, it's the fuel pump... you can see the bracket for the AIR pump above and to the right of it in the pics.

Looks like both fuel lines and the rubber line need to be replaced. I can almost guarentee that as soon as you attempt to unscewing the fuel lines, They are going to twist the metal lines...

Re: What is this part???

Thanks guys for the info and the heads up on twisting the lines, I would have been pretty unhappy to get under there and twist them unexpectedly...I thought to get to the fuel pump you had to drop the rear end and gas tank and a bunch of other stuff?

Only in cars with FI, or which otherwise have in-tank pumps.

The vast majority of carbed cars have always had pumps just like that one; block-mounted, driven by the cam.

Yeah, consider yourself very lucky. Old-school fuel pumps are a DREAM to change compared to the in-tank ones on fuel injected 3rd gens!
