1988 Firebird Formula Engine cut out

hi semi new here.
here is my problem I have an 88 firebird that I swapped from tpi to carb(305 blew up) and I just got the car running and I took it out for a test drive(runs great) on the way back to my house the engine just dies in a way as if somebody had turned off the key. I know my alt is bad(test drive) I have a jump on it right now and the starter spins slow(3rd on 10.5-1 compression) any idea why it just up and died?
